my sand dollar is hurt

I noticed today that one of my sand dollars came up to the top of the sand(they never do that). Tonight when he was still there I took him the rest of the way out of the sand and noticed that he has a big hole. Does anyone know what might have caused this? They have been in my tank for well over a year now. The hole that I am referring to is the one that is right beside the long slit

Debbie, the areas these guys normally inhabit (sand flats) are rather devoid of predation. He could have been attacked by a crab, or had a rock (even a small one) fall on him. Much like urchins (in the same family,) once their test (shell) is broken, they're almost always done for. :(

These critters really need a species-only tank with at least 2' x 2' of open live sand to have enough food to survive, and really good calcium levels.

but mine didn't starve he got hurt  Before I got them the company I bought them from said that I needed a really deep sand bed and so that is what I created

Really deep, really open (large area) and very live.. a species only tank with those criteria, few predators, etc would seem to work.. but not a mixed reef with limited (in area) sand bed doesn't sound tenable long term.
