My Refugium

I know it sounds bad, but I've been having more fun lately looking into my refugium than my DT. Thank goodness I went acrylic for this, because I can see everything that goes on in there.

After this week's water change, I sat for an hour watching all of the little bugs, shrimp, worms, and even what looks like a tiny serpent starfish swimming around, eating, and going about their business.

I dosed some phyto, and watched the green milky drops fall to the bottom of the fuge, where lots of little copepods descended on it to feast. *THAT* was neat to watch, even better a fairly large (1cm) shrimp ran out and grabbed a few of the pods that were eating.

Should I keep up the phyto feeding? I'd like to see more of these little guys reproduce and eventually end up in my display. About how much per day should I add? I put in a couple of capfuls for a 210 system.

I love my fuge, that's why it's a separate tank- I spend 10-15 minutes each evening looking at it. I've recent started dosing phyto, but I'm bad about measuring.. a 'squirt' is not an official unit :)

For the longest time I had no visible life in my fuge, now there's so much in there it isn't even funny. I love sitting and watching it.

I dosed drop-wise, I'll try the "squirt" method tomorrow morning.

Are you talking about Phytofeast, where you can squirt it in, or Phytoplankton?

I've spent 100s of hours enjoying my previous refugiums. I can't with this one because it is in the back of my sump.

Enjoy. :)

Only bad thing about the HOB refugium... can't see it as easily. I should be able to see a little of what is going on in there though.

Totally agree, I get a kick out of watching the "little" stuff that goes on in a reef tank... pods, hermits, and even snails.
