My new 90g finally!!!

I have taken quite some time with this build and all of you have helped me along the way with advice and confidence building to get it going. I couldn't have done without you!

I bought this tank/stand from Rick/Smashmix and have spent the last 4 months collecting equipment, refinishing the cabinet and canopy, and of course finally the build.

It has been cycling for two weeks and I added the corals today.

What do you think?

Gail

I will be happy when there's some fish in it, but for now the corals alone are nice to look at. Do some of you recognize these corals? Everything I have has come from other members. It's fun to look at them and try to remember where each one of them came from. Tri, Monisa, Smiller, LittleDebbie, Tramelle, Rick B, etc, etc...I can't remember who gave me the GSP and the Xenia, how rude of me....sorry

Thank you DFWMAS!

Gail

I am not a very good photographer...

Looking good... I like the aqua-scape, you can never have to many bridges, caves and flat table top areas in my opinion.

T5-lighting - how many and what wattages. I'm looking to do a 75 or 90 setup in the next few weeks (if I ever find a tank the right size). Your whole setup looks great.

I love the way you've arranged your rockwork. Did you do anything special to create the bridges?

Alice, I just made sure the large base rocks on the bottom were anchored in rock lifts made from pvc pipes (4" diameter w/cutouts & pushed into the DSB) this holds the base rocks in place bc rocks in the sand alone isn't very stable. Then I set each long thin shelf piece on 3 base rocks anchored in a triangle for stability. I didn't use epoxy or acrylic rods, but everything is very stable.

Dave, the long top shelf is going to be my clam shelf someday.

Thanks for the compliments.

Carolyn,

I have two T5 reflector strips with 2 bulbs each

1 48" strip (which wasn't on in these pics) with 1 54w 10k daylight bulb, and 1 54w actinic+ bulb.

1 36" strip with 1 39w actinic+ bulb and 1 39w aquablue bulb. I am going to change this combo bc it's too bright for the evening atmosphere. I'm going to Frank's Tanks tomorrow to talk with him about a better combo, I'll let you know the outcome.

I'm actually looking forward to this month's meeting on lighting, I could use a lot of training in this area

Nice!! We'll definitely have to keep tabs on each other. I like you sun coral placement. said:
Mike, I was very careful to make sure the sun coral was AWAY FROM THE LIGHT!!!

The whole time I was working on the aquascape, I kept hearing the little voice in my head (Marc's advice post) "Gail They Don't Like Light!"

Thanks Marc.

Keep in touch Mike, it will be fun to suffer together

It looks great :!: If you need some frags just let us know what you are looking for. Enjoy all that extra room, it will go fast.

Is the white rock the rock you got from the rock yard? It looks like your were able to get it pretty white...are you happy with it? I'm considering some for my new 90.

Carolyn,

You know that is the rock I got from the stone yard.
I noticed yesterday that it is already growing coraline algae!
It turned very green for a couple of weeks after I started the system, then the 3rd week I had a hair algae outbreak, Harvey (sea hare) took care of that.
Now there are little purple spots everywhere on the top surfaces of the rocks. I have some coraline growing on the overflow also.

So, I guess my answer is yes...I am very happy with the rock. I did spend a bit of time cleaning it and also soaked it for a couple of months in saltwater with powerheads in the garage.

Good luck, if you need any help, let me know.

Sumpdiver, Is there a trick to keeping the sand white for a long time bc I would like to keep it that way as much as possible?

Yes. Don't put anything in it! 8)

Nice looking tank. I just set one up with the limestone (light gray). You can't beat the sugary sand you have. Enjoy.

I like the sugar fine sand, only I messed up by not sifting it while it was dry before adding it to water bc now I have all these little stones and shells surfacing to the top. It doesn't look good. I guess I can sift it with a strainer, but am afraid it will make a mess and cloud up again for a while.

Any suggestions for a solution out there?

Thanks,
Gail
