My moonlight project

I took some scrap acrylic, some 10mm blue LED's, and some chrome plastic holders and came up with 8 of these. I'm going to try to get them mounted & wired if not wed. then this weekend.

cool project. You may want to eliminate the screw in a sw tank or they might look rusty pretty quick. I have a extra moon light laying around I might mess some acrylic as I had not even thought of using it but your mount makes it look easy.

Let see what it looks like done :D

use stailess steel screws then the wont rust if you can get them. I get mine at work but i'd imbed nylon nuts in my canopy then finish over them with filler. I have a peice of plexiglass in the top of my canopy which is threaded were i put my mounting screws. BTW i think the chrome finish will rust as well and will also flake off.

If you're talking about the holders I don't think it's actual chrome. They're plastic so it's probably more like paint.

Got them mounted to the canopy. Here's a pic.

Well, got them mounted, wired, and canopy back on the tank. Now I need to hunt up a power supply.
I know I need 12 volts. What I don't know for sure is what I need as far as amps. The LED's w/resistor are rated for 20-30 mA. Now, since there are 8 hooked in paralell am I correct in assuming I need 8 x 20-30 mA for a total of 160-240 mA?

Yep! Your math is correct....just make sure you fuse the power supply and I'd suggest 1/2 amp fuse. You could power the whole thing off a 12vdc 1amp wall wart from radio shack, and buy an inline fuse holder for it....

Why not an old computer power supply

Yep, that would work! Just any 12vdc source will work.

I usually have various wall warts lying around for projects but never have a non-used computer supply...hehe

I've got a ton of both, but a full PC power supply would be a wee bit of overkill to power 8 LED's in my humble opinion...

Main reason for the wall wart is to be small & fit my DC-8 without crowding out another plug. I do have an old PC power supply but I already went and got a wall wart from Radio Shack. Didn't have a 12v wart laying around. Everything but 12v but no 12v.

Well, 10:30pm lights went off, moons came on. WOOHOO, they work!
Now just need to figure out how to make my camera take a pic.
