[I installed my MH lights late last night. Here is the thread about it on Reef Central, including the pictures.

Feel free to comment here or there with your thoughts and suggestions.]

[Marc,

I like how you were able to still use the old canopy. I've run into that problem with having a standard Oceanic canopy filling with 4 VHO bulbs and no room or distance from the water to put MH's in. Thanks for the inspiration!

[I just so no reason to build a new one until I was positive what I wanted. And to be honest, it would be fine if I just sealed the extensions with some urethane. However, I just wanted to get them installed finally!

I picked up a piece of 48" x 8" (1/4" thick) black acrylic today to hang across the opening. First of all to shield my eyes  and also to find out what kind of heat builds up with the front covered.

I'll know tomorrow after the lights have been on about 7 hours. I didn't want to modify anything, so I used double-stick velcro to attach it along the top. I'm guessing the acrylic will reflect the lighting back into the tank (ricochet effect perhaps).]

[interested in your results. I have the same problem. I have not even dared to cover the front as I am experancing temp problems. I did swithc from flat reflector to parallel and they helped a lot. I got them from premium and they were 35 each I think.]

[My lights have been on and we are well past the heat of the day. Temp is 80.6F. The acrylic isn't tightly sealed against the front, and there is a 1" gap.

However I've been thinking about how I'll make a new canopy, and I think I'm going to put fans in the top to pull heat out and blow up toward the ceiling, since I can't see it and heat rises naturally.

So it won't be a problem, imo.]

[Well I will chime in and offer some advise. Put two 4" fans in your canopy and have one blowing in and one out. I currently have 1,370watts under my hood with the same set up and my tank never gets over 79 degrees. Someone stated they never heard of doing this unless the hood was completely enclosed. I am here to tell you it works. My coil in my AC was leaking and could not keep my house below 80 F during the day and still my tank temp did not change on either of my tanks. Try it you might see the light hahahaha.]

[Thanks Danny. I've been thinking about doing that, as I have 4 24v fans waiting to be installed. I've also thought about installing two of them at the top, since it is above eye level (mine anyway) to pull heat up and out of the canopy. Since heat will rise anyway, having them blow out would be a good way to get rid of it.]
