My Lawnmower Blenny is hungry

I won "Lenny" at the last raffle. since then he has had a field day eating my green hair algae, for that i would like to thank him. however i am now getting worried... there is not much GHA left and im not sure what to feed him. I have read that they will eat mysis shrimp but that is what i feed everybody else and he seems to turn his nose up at it. I understand he is mostly a herbivore so i have tried nori on a clip and he wouldn't even swim near it. what else should i try as i am running out of GHA (which is both a good and bad thing)

Try putting some nori on a little rock with a rubberband next to his favorite spot...that could help. I used to have one that would try for the nori clip, but my pbt would have no part of it :?

Maybe try to use a baster and get him used to it..then try to spot feed him...just a idea.

I think the rock trick may do it though

Awwww... he's so adorable.

Have you tried Spirulina? Ocean Nutrition makes a frozen cube product for algae grazers. It also contains fresh seafood. I feed it for my tangs and they go crazy over it...!

Sorry I couldn't be of more help... but I'd try Spirulina for the little guy.

Good luck,

donna

I also won 2 of them from the raffle at Plano Pets.... I put 1 in the 200G FOWLR and also have 1 in my 100g Reef... I normally put Nori in the creavaces in the rock near where he likes to sit and he will eat from there... if all else fails capture him and place him in your refugium and he will be fat and happy until more GHA shows up in the tank.

If you can get the nori down on the substrate/live rock somewhere he'll eventually find it. I wouldn't worry too much about it "fouling" or going bad if it takes hime a while to get it.

They are awesome fish!

My LMB watched the other fish eat the falling stuff for a while and then tried it. He ate like a pig everything but GHA, and I sold him to make room for another fish.

Mine eats ANYTHING I throw into the tank including formula 1, formula 2, Prime Reef, Mysis, Brine, etc....He's getting fat and is definately happy. Best of luck to you with him.

Cheers,

This is my experience for what its worth. I have had a lawnmower blenny in my tank for almost a year now. He is in a 40g breeder with no detectable hair algea, I clean my glass once a week it is so algea free/nutrient poor. I have never seen this guy eat any frozen foods I feed everyone else. Yet through all of that, he has grown and continued to be as fat as can be. I have no idea what he is eating.

So in conclusion, until you see him start thinning up, I wouldnt be very worried about it. Just my opinion.

I have a very similar experience to JasonJones. My Lawnmower is ultra fat I have no hair algae and I have never seen him eat any food I put in the tank. I am not sure what he eats but he is so fat that there must be a lot of it. My best guess is he eats the very new growth of algae before it turns into something visible, I am pretty sure with out him some visible algae would start to grow, also I think he munches the film algae off of the back glass where it never gets cleaned. I could be way off. Bottom line if it does not look emaciated then I would not worry, I think they eat stuff you can?t see w/o magnification. (i.e., if you look at a relatively barren piece of LR and notice it sort of looks dusty, but the dust doesn?t blow off like detritus, that clear to off-white fuzz is brand new baby algae. I think that is what he eats?)
