My Emerald Crab is eating brown diatoms

I just caught my emerald crab eating brown diatoms in my 2 week old tank. I never knew they would eat that type of algea.

Got a cell phone picture of him. Notice the white sand under him and within his reach.

I pretty much transfered everything from my 46 gallon into this tank. I have candy canes, yumas, ricordias, xenia, frogspawn, 4 types of zoas, gren and red shrooms, and a few other corals plus one six line wrasse.

The diatoms are probably due to using tap water for most of the initial fill up.

Those are Yumas in the pic.

And yes I used to do a lot more than just kiss on the first date! (If they let me)

Ahh - initial tap water fill. I'm a first time RO/DI unit owner - I have been completely shocked at the difference it has made in my new tank set up. I'm 8-10 weeks (forgot how many now) into this set up and I hardly have or had any diatoms.

This is the cleanest tank I have ever owned.

I use to be pretty fast too - then my now 3 year old has slowed me down.

I have already started using only distilled water for top off. I plan on getting a RO DI system soon but I will be buying the water until I get the system.

I have slowed down also. I have a baby girl due in April.

Congratulations! It's amazing how they change your life - at first you think why did I do this, and then she's staring at you with those big eyes and saying "daddy" & it is truly a miracle.

Ok - now back to Emerald talk. I just added one to my tank as well this past weekend. They're a cool little crab.

They do get big though. I had 5 in a 34 Gallon solana to help with bubble algae. Cleaned up every bit of algae in about two weeks. I moved them to my 100 and 105 gallon tanks, 3 months later, they went from 1-2", to about 3". Great cleaners...

Yeah they are. I used to catch them when I lived in Florida. I had 20+ of them in my 125 back then. Now I got to pay $12 a piece for them. I bought two a couple months ago. I only found one during the move. Either he died or someone I sold liverock to got a free crab.

I used to have one that was so big I named him HULK. He was awesome. If you would put anything near him he would try and attack it with his claws.
