Mud vs other, plant tank

I have recently added a 10gallon plant tank onto my 120. I was reading a bit about using mud over rock for a advantage. I do plan on growing alot of plants and hopefully culturing copepods in there for mandarins. (plants: halimeda, shoal grass, botryocladia, gracilaria Hayi, sea luttce, and shaving brushes) I got plenty of light!

so i guess my question is is there an advantage of what sedament Is used? if so what?

here is what it looks like not filled yet.

Crushed coral works just fine. The macro algae has a root structure but it is for anchor it self instead of nutrient uptake. They will grab hold of the substrate and keep trucking along. That is how I setup this 12g tank.
