moving sand bed to new tank

I'm moving my reef tank to a bigger tank. I have moved all the inhabitants to a temporary aquarium, but need to know the best way to move the sand bed. The sand bed is over a year old and I don't want to loose all the good things that are living in it. Any information would be very much appreciated.
Thanks,
Mary

if its a deep sand bed and youve never mixed or sifted the sand before it could be quit toxic to the new tank to just dump it in it would cause a huge spike in the water quality thats if its a deep sand bed and not as much for a 1-2 inch sand bed.

If its a DSB..... skim the top 1.5 - 2 inches off the top with a dustpan or something like that and only use that portion (once the water has been drained all the way down. Then scoop out the rest onto newspaper and spread it out, go through with a pair of tongs and pull out all the worms and little stars that you can visibly see.

Put the NEW sand into the new tank and then put the OLD sand over the new along with all the critters you preserved.

i would get new sand wash it out real good and just seed it with a few cups of the old and if you want pick through the old to get the live stuff out as much as you can.... or do the same and just wash out the old sand after pick through it instead of buying new.

Thanks for the quick response. The sand bed is about 3" deep. said:
That's a tweener..... I would still only skim it..... when you are skimming it, if you get a rotten egg smell or black sand/water, avoid it and don't go any deeper.

I would also run carbon on the new system as well for a few days.
