Moving into the new tank

My Oceanic 215G is 4 months old now with corals and a Powder Blue tang doing great. I still have 6 other fish in another tank I need to put in the big tank now.

I've been very careful so far to keep this new tank parasite free while setting it up. Now I am looking for a good way to introduce the fish from my old tank without the possibility of introducing parasites etc. Even though they show no signs of disease or Ich etc, they could simply be resistant I suppose. If that is the case, could they introduce a parasite even though they look fine?

What is the best way to go about this? Without the extreme of 6 weeks hypo', which I don't think is needed here. Thoughts anyone?

If any of your fish have ever had Ick, then QT. If you are not sure if any have had ick then I would at least move them to the QT tank and observe for 2-3 weeks. If that lil stressor doesn't get anything to show up then they should be good to go. No need to waste all of your hard work now that you are almost there.

Cheers :!:

I'll have to agree to that too... Keep in mind that once you place the fish into the tank... that it is darn near impossble to get it out. Even with a fsh trap..

Thanks guys,

I plan to start the new QT this weekend. I'll go three weeks with a couple fish and then move on to the next couple. This rotation should have them all in the new tank by May.

Well you know the answer. It sounds like you know you have Ich in the current tank (just not on the current fish) so a couple options in order of preference.

1) Hypo in qt for at least 3 weeks (only for sure way)
2) FW dip for 30 minutes. This will most likely knock everything off but again it's risky.
3) Just transfer and hope. Most likely you'll be fine but you never know

You'll have to decide for yourself the risk/reward for you. A normal salintiy qt is just a waste in my opinion. If your going to QT you should hypo. It can only help. I hypo all my fish before introducing them when I get them in.

I would choose number 1 but I like to make absolute sure I'm pest free because I have some very hard to keep fish so it's up to you.

Thanks Keith, good advice.

I was under the assumption that for hypo' of ich, 6 weeks was mandatory.
There's no way I can do a six week right now. So you think three weeks is sufficient?

Well I think 3 weeks at hypo is an absolute minimum and given that you will take at least a day to take it down and a few days to bring it back up I would say 4 weeks total time is the absolute minimum.

Some have claimed to have Ich after 3 weeks but I'm about 99% confident it was due to either a resistant strain (not likely) or not keeping daily tabs on the salinity (of not having a refractometer) and let it creep up at some point.
