Most efficient RODI

I'm looking for an Rodi setup that will be as easy to use as possible.

I have two small tanks and will probably only use 10 gallon a week max

I'd like a float switch (will this easily mount to a 5 gallon bucket)
I'm think a 5 stage will be best but will 6 stage with extra di filter allow the di media to last the same length of time as the other filters (what is the reason for two di filters).

I think the extream typhoon III For the tds alarms, the purge valves, the single frame, pressure valve all features to remind me to maintain the unit, maximize life of filters/membranes, and to make sure water is ready to go.

Any other features I should look for or are any of these features not useful/worth paying for.

Thanks,

Hi Bruce -

Hopefully Marc will chime in as he knows quite a bit about these things. But from my experience, a dual-DI setup is a waste as the first DI filter grabs everything anyway, and the second one is just there until the first one gets exhausted. For me, the DI filter lasts about a year before I get a TDS reading > 0. I've seen recommendations to replace your sediment filters every 6 months, but I replace mine every year. With your small tanks, you could probably go awhile before replacing your sediment filters and replenishing your DI, but the best way to tell is with a TDS Meter. It's best to get one right when you get your RODI filter so you can keep tabs on its performance. Once you get a TDS reading of > 0, then it's probably time to replenish your DI resin.

As for the float valve, if it's the Kent brand (which I use as well), it's best to mount those on a flat surface in order to get a good seal. Your normal 5-gallon bucket is round and may not provide a very good mounting surface. The float valve itself works well!

I don't have experience with the Typhoon III, but have heard that they are good filters. I got a cheap Water General from Ebay and it's worked great for me for 3 years now.

Been researching this lately I would look into dual ro membrane setup it has less waste water. As it puts the waste water from the first
Membrane through a second membrane so you will have less waste water

thanks for the feedback everyone, I decided on the typphoon III extream for the clean design an the features, I have an extra housing for a romembrane I may add later and I dont know if I will need a pump but if I do I can add that later

Thanks again!
Bruce

That's interesting, Pampee - I didn't realize that was an option. I'll have to go check that out! I wonder if it's two membranes of different efficiencies, i.e., a 100gpd followed by a 75gpd? Do you know?

here is the info and there is a video on how easy it is to install it

I just upgraded to the vertex 200gpd system and i can say is WOW. The reviews i read on reefcentral were awesome and i can say that i can make about 8-9 gph on this thing. The water rejection is less than 1-1. I tested and get 5g of good water to about 4.5g of waste water. It has a microprocesser in it that shuts the booster down when no water flow is going and when the top off is full. It does not use an auto shut off valve but an electronic soloenid to cut the water to the line. They also make a 100gpd that is cheaper but i went with the larger one for my needs. 1-1 waste ratio is totally awesome and it is what sold me on the unit. It is also super quiet when it is ran. Premium Aquatics has them and you can talk to Jermey as he uses them as well. For the cost you can not go wrong. It also has a digital TDS meter with a large oilfilled pressure gauge and all the goodies. I tested the TDS guage with a hanna and it was spot on. Give them a look, i think you will be pleasantly suprised at the quality.

I also forgot to mention the microprocesser goes into an automatic flush mode every so often so you dont ever have to flush your membranes. There are folks on RC that have ran this unit for over a year and half on large systems that have only had to change di, sediment and carbon as the membranes are still chugging along.
