More SPS polyp extension at lower specific gravity?

I had this posted in the SPS section, but no replies.

My freshwater auto top-off dumped a bit too much water the other day and brought my specific gravity down to 1.020.

By the time I noticed it, 10 hours had elapsed. I've seen this before, when it happend last time, but all of my SPS polyps were way extended.

Just wondering if anyone has noticed this with their SPS.

I'd like to see more discussion on this. I may be wrong and you may be on to something. Did anything else change, like PH, temp? Or who knows maybe the extra water diluted somethign tht is normally not detected.

It is just my general understanding that sps like the salinity higher not lower. But longer polyp exstension is generally considered a good or healthy thing.

Polyp extension honestly doesn't have a lot to do with the health of the corals. I've talked to Eric B. a lot about this and he confirmed you should have some but just because your acros polyps don't make it shaggy doesn't mean it's less healthy then someones elses tank where it is shaggy. There are just way to many factors.

It's interesting you observed that. Have you calibrated your refractometer? Maybe your off by .002 or .003 making it to high when you think it's "normal"???

Good point and an easy thing ot have happen. I think all of us have found our refractomers to be off some until calibrated to the normal salinity level (not to zero with RO/DI)

Nothing has changed as far as PH or anything else.

I hate to say it, but I don't have a Refractometer. I'm still using the floating kind. I'm buying one now online. I hear the floating type are accurate though.
