Moody Colt Coral - how to make it happy?

My Colt Coral was the only coral in the tank for several of the first weeks I had anything in there and always looked great. Ever since I added in new coral (specifically a torch coral seems to be the source) about 3 weeks ago, the Colt has stayed tucked in 90% of the time. Been so long since looked good I am starting to think it is dieing.

in the past it has been mid-water level, and I have very strong lighting. think moving it further away from the torch and lower down for less lighting would help it re-open?

In a search, I saw that Marc mentioned running more carbon and it will open up. Will try that as well.

Any other recommendations? I can take a pic if that will help.

The torch's are very aggressive, watch the tank after lights ou and see if it's sweeper tentacles are the culprit. Looks like you are all over it already, trust you instincts and move either one.

Cheers :!:

Cliff I would assume from your signature that the new coral is not close to the colt. Running carbon 24/7 IMO is a great idea, just in case any newly added corals get into a chemical warfare with corals already in the tank.
But in my experience my colt coral always is a good indicator when my alkalinity is a little low. What is your alkalinity levels?

the colt and the torch were about 12" apart. not sure if that constitutes as close or not.

good call on the alkalinity. i saw that my pH has been high lately (8.55) and assumed that my alkalinity must be high as well. Just tested it and it is low at 7.5 dKH.

I will start to raise it. what is the maximum per day that is safe to add? .5 dKH good? i will be using baked baking soda.

also, I know the range is 8-11 where it should be, but which is better off, high or low in that range?

You better not add baked baking soda if your pH is 8.55 already. Just use baking soda. It will raise alkalinity without raising pH (it will bump up briefly but drop again within an hour or two).

Keeping it between 8 and 11 dKH is fine. There is no absolute in that area, but yours is a tad low. Bring it up another 1dkH and it should be okay.
