Montipora sp. problem

Well for some odd reason over night all my different types of montis have not been lookin good. Ive had most of them for a year or so with no problem. I havent added any new type of monti in a while, and also have been searching every spec for signs of monti eating nudis and no signs.
Every other sps in my system has good polyp extension with no problems.

parameters

ammon-0
trates-0
trites-0
ph-8.2
dkh-8
calcium-420ppm
salinity -1.025

I have a confusa, three types of digita, and four types of caps. all have no polyp extension which normally are very fuzzy

Any thoughts?

ive run out of mg tests.

I need to order all new tests in general.

If it is low..what is a good additive for mg. ive never had a problem with it soo ive never had to supplement.

thanx

with your coral growth you may be using it up. I had a mont confusa go south on me as with some slower growth on some of my other monte's, Marc pointed me in the Mg direction. My test kit was depleated and they are on back order everywhere, at least the Saliferts are. Anyway after testing I'm finding I have to almost double up on my weekly dosing of Mg as it's just getting used faster then it was 6 months ago. I use the Mag Flake / Epson salt mix as prescribed on with the 2 part DIY.

Thanx.. ill get it tested somewhere and get some mag flake. I see thats what most people use. Is the epson salt a must?

I just use liguid calcium and kents superbuffer. with that and weekly 15g water changes with the RSCP salt everything has been smooth. Over night I noticed all montis were not doin good even the frags on my frag rack thathave been doin good for a while.

Real random.

Thanx again for the info

Evan

good luck finding the mag flake (at least locally). Epson salt is cheap and can be found at most drug and grocery stores. There are a couple mix variations that use different amounts of epson slats to compenstate for the other DIY 2 part additives. Ashlar, Marc and others commented on it in a thread just the other day. I think if you are using comercial products for the Alk and Ca the DIY Mg mix calls for alot less epson salt. BTW you can pick up a small box of it for about a buck or two so it shouldn't be a big deal to mix it up if you can find the mag flake. Otherwise, the comercial Mg additves are pretty expensive in comparison.

You can also get a gallon of Kent Tech M for around 19.00 at Marine Depot. I have used the two part mag supplement but prefer the liquid. I had trouble with salinity levels rising too high by supplimenting with the two part method. If you do go with that method the recipe calls for 9.5 cups of magflake to 1 cup of Epsom salt. HTH

Try the seachem mg crystals... about a large tablespoon every few weeks is all I need in my system to maintain. It has no effect on salinity either. A word of possible warning on TechM. I attempted to use it to get rid of some bryopsis awhile back and dosed (albeit more than recommended) to get my levels up and noticed some fading on various species of coral and zoanthids/palys. I also had a major shift in light spectrum during that time so that could have contributed to it. Just keep an eye on coloration if you use TechM as it contains more than just Magnesium. Things are calming down and coloring back up but I still have a couple of corals that are bleached/faded but they appear on the mend.

Which recipe are you using that has that ratio??? The lastest magnesium recipe from Randy Holmes-Farley is different. Here's the link to the updated 2 part recipe along with everything you ever wanted to know about magnesium. :) http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2006-07/rhf/index.php

You might also consider the fact that you might have a fish nipping at the montipora. Do you happen to have any dwarf angels in your tank?

Ya I have a coral beauty. Ill start checkin for him. Ive had him for 2 or 3 months now and no problems.. this seemed like an over night type of deal. ill kep my eye out.

that would suck if it was the coral beauty.

thankx guys

Well Marc, I think you nailed it. After watching my coralbeauty for a while..its official he has been nippin at my digis and all. I wonder why he only does it to montiporas... weird

Now time to catch him. I have a fish trap and all.. has anyone ever had to catch one. I hope its not as hard as catching a wrasse. Man im bummed...ive had him for like 3 months and seemed fin... but hes gotta goo now..lol

Thanx again marc

i caught a dwarf with the 2 liter deal, took some nori and put it in there, took 30 mins or so...does yours eat nori? if so, your fish trap should make it a sinch

I have no idea if he eats nori. Ill give it a wirl tonite or tomorrow
I have been feeding once a day lately .. i wonder if that made him start lookin for food more.

If I cant catch him ill just try feeding a lot more.
