Modifying a Wet/Dry into a Sump/Refugium

Ok, I picked up a used Custom sealife Wet/dry some time ago and I want to modify it into a Sump/refugium configuration with an insump Skimmer.
it measures L=23.5" X H=15" x D=12" with the Sump/ref area measuring
L=14" x H=15" x D=12". The Skimmer available looks like a Seaclone 100 or 150 insump or HOB with a Maxijet 900.
There are 2 1" inlets. The trickle portion contains 1/2 Bioballs on top of 1/2 liverock fragments (I ran out of Live rock to completely fill it.
My return (to be replaced) is a Rio 1100 pumping through a 1/2" flex line.
I have a 2" live sand base in the Sump portion with about a small coffeecan full of Caluerpa floating in it.

How can I modify this to act correctly as a Sump/Refugium/Skimmer section ? What changes do I need to make ?

Pictures Forthcoming....

Russ, it is too small to pull it off unfortunately. I've tried it myself with my 55g, and even added more acrylic to make it larger. Here's a tiny picture of my attempt, which was worthless and soon was replaced by a much better choice.

I have got the same type of thing setup using a wet/dry which I built a refugium in.

I have noticed my nitrates are rising .... maybe this is the problem....??

So can the Idea and just convert it into a stand alone refugium ? I'm seeing the problem with the volume as you've all mentioned. I'm just trying to find a way to utilize it instead of it sitting collecting dust.
