modding a maxijet?

I've got a mj900 that I'm about to put in my nanocube as a return pump but it's a little too large. Would it be ok if I cut off the intake tubing(arrow pointing to it in pic)? Would it effect the pump at all? Or would it be fine. I'm not looking to mod it to make it more powerful or anything.
 
Sorry I didn't specify...I'm going to pull that guard off, but there's still about an inch of plastic tubing attached to the pump that I want to saw off. Would that be ok?
 
Anything you cut off / remove will end up being an area that can get clogged up. A snail can get sucked against it and die, sucking the animal right out of its shell. Other than that, no issues at all.
 
Ok thanks Marc. The pump's going to be in one of the chambers of my nano so I don't think a snail would get back there. I've never seen them back there at least.
