Mixing Salts

I still don't have an RODI unit, but want one real bad. I haven't gotten one cause it's seems difficult to hook up and I also don't know where to put it to not make it an eye sore. But I still would like one, just don't know what kind either

So on to the salt mix. I got my salt water mixed up at LFS (which I had to end up stirring the water because the employee there is new and dumped the salt in the water and checked salinity right away and thought since his hand was in the water, he'd stir up the mix with his arm) He wasn't letting the salt take time to mix in before measuring the salinity. So I ended up stirring for good measure. Anyway, he used Oceanic Sea Salt Mix and I am now thinking I need to get an RODI unit to make sure I get good quality salt water. And I have read that Red Sea Coral Pro Salt is good. Would it be ok (if) when I get my RODI unit that I start using Red Sea Coral Pro?

I've used a couple different salts in my tank since it started, and haven't had any issues. I've been using the Tropic Marin Pro-Reef salt now for a while, seems to be just fine - but honestly have never noticed much difference. Think lights, flow and phosphate removal seem to have the biggest impact of anything I've ever worried about.

On the RO/DI front - I hid mine under the kitchen sink. I fill up one of those 5 gallon jugs with the DI and use it for top off, so there's no lines running about all the time. The advantage of that hiding place was I also put in a faucet for the RO water - now we get to drink nice clean water, too!

a quaity salt mix and water is verry inportant if you dont have a RO i have had good luck with drinking water from walmart . back when i didnt have a RO UNIT i went to lots of web sites and reserched a lot of diferant water and found that that water was just as good as the rest and cheaper to and i found from useing distilled water that it was harder to keep my pramms stabale in my 12g aquapod than with the drinking water . it is the green letered one and it works good. now on to salt. i have used many diferant ones and in one statment/ reef cristals/

Got mine off ebay - after looking around it became apparent that the housings, brackets, fittings, etc - they're all the same. Biggest key is to make sure you get one with the # of filters and housings and type of prefilters and ro membrane that you need/want right off the bat, cause it's cheaper than adding them on later or swapping them out.

I also have the Typhoon 5 Stage. I have had no problems and zero TDS. In the long run you will save a lot of money by buying a RO/DI and mixing your own salt. Plus you dont have to depend on someone else getting your parameters in line. When I first got into saltwater I bought my water from a LFS and there was always some parameter off for some reason. Im not saying there arent LFS's that make great water I am just saying its simple and easy to make sure you are getting perfect water when you do a water change.
