mexican turbo snail death

i had a mexican turbo snail upside down the other day (sunday i think), tried to flip him over a few times, he was moving but wouldnt grab on to a rock so i laid him right side up on the sand. realized today he was in the same spot so i picked him up and realized he was pretty much melting away inside the shell. so i grabbed him and put it in the trash can that was almost full.

literally 5 minutes later, my entire living area is filled with the most god awful foul smell I have ever smelt :(

these things are deadly!

leave a dead anenome out of the water for 10 seconds....you will discover worse...

Yep... dead things get rather ripe.

How are you acclimating your snails? Snails tend to live a long time provided they were acclimated properly and have enough to eat. Acclimation both on your end and the way they came into the Fish Store... which is out of your control of course.

That's a good acclimation procedure for sure.

Plenty of algae for them to eat?? If so, maybe it was just his time ;) Nitrates will kill them off too. Other than that they should hang in the for years unless it was just their time to go. The other thing with Mex Turbos, is temps. They are tropical, but don't do well long term if your temps run over 78-79 on a regular basis.

Also one other note, some snails like Mexican Turbos, Astreas cannot turn themselves over and will quickly die if left upside down. So you will need to check fairly regularly and make sure they haven't fallen off a rock and landed upside down on the sand.
