Metal Halide or Power Compact....

I am looking to pick the brains of some of the knowledgable reefers on this site. I currently have the HQI Aqualight Pro with 150 metal halide on my 58 gallon aquarium. For the past year and half I had been using the Coralife Power Compact on my 29 gallon, with outstanding success. Now it seems as if I cant keep the tank clean. I am wondering if this might have something to do with the light or the duration of the light cycle. I am sorta frusterated and considering going back to the Power Compact lighting. I dont keep any SPS corals or clams so I am wondering what the general consensus would be on this topic? Also it seems as if I am having an outbreak of diatoms all of a sudden which I am assuming is caused from my friend topping off with tap water a few weeks ago. Is there a quick way to get my rocks back to normal instead of the copper brown color? Thanks in advance.

I'm sure your diatoms are caused by the tap water and most likely your MH bulb needs to be replaced. After a year a MH bulb looses lots of PAR and weak lighting can cause algae growth.

Here some recommendations:

Run some carbon in a filter
Replace MH Bulb
Large water changes w/RODI water not tap
