Ok so I have been doing a ton of investigating on sump systems and noticed that quite a few people put media balls in their sump. Now what advantages does this have and is it recommended? Should I fill my first chamber of my sump up with bio balls?
I took all my Bioballs out of my nano and replaced it with macro algea and have had better success with biological filtration. With my new setup, I went with a refugium instead and only have live rock and chaeto.
I've replaced bio balls with live rock in the setups I have and they have done well. If for some reason you decide to go the bio ball route, let me know and you can mine.
bio balls were used a long time ago and if still used are mostly for fish only systems. if you have a reef, i wouldnt use them as they can cause problems down the road.
Ok thanks. I was just wondering because I hear everyone talking about filter media and all that and I have no idea what that is or how to set that up in my tank if I had it. So if i have a refugium, I should be good?
a refugium is a start, but many other things go into running a sw tank. filter media can range from carbon to just filter socks, or a dozen things in between. some are good, some are a waste, some help, some dont. it just depends on your system. the best thing to do is get your measurements, your equipment, and your maintenance habits and choose what is best for you. got questions, post this info for us and well see if we can help.
As far as I can tell, all looks good. I don't see a skimmer in there, so that would be my first purchase at this point. Adding some maco algae to your sump if you don't have it, would be beneficial as well. More live rock..good too !!
If you need a handful of cheato for your fuge let me know. Ill give you some. I'm in benbrook. Not to far from you.
