Marsh Salt Study! Results!

I heard the preliminary results are out - Red Sea & Reef Crystal are sort of tied for best and Instant Ocean was the worst out of the 10 tested....

I'm too tired to find the threads with the pictures of the tanks and progress from way back when all we knew were letters, but:

A. Coralife
B. Reef Crystals
C. hW Marinemix
D. Crystal Sea Marinemix bioassay formula
E. Tropic Marin
F. Red Sea
G. Kent
H. Oceanic
J. Instant Ocean
K. Natural Seawater (The control)

To avoid confusion.... THe list Serk posted are the sample labels NOT the order of best results. (Some people may not know the tanks were alphabetized in the test samples) :D

I am needing to buy some today. So yes, this is real timely. I had been using IO for years. It is now time to try something else.

Serk did you hear about those results at the MACNA conference or are they posted online somewhere yet? According to the MARSH page Borneman is going to publish them in magazines first. I'd like to see the results if they are somewhere online.

*nod* and I have to wonder how valid the test results are since they moved all the tanks in the middle of the study.

Thank you Bill, yes, that is NOT a ranking by any stretch of the imagination... The study was done blind, those letter - salt combinations are just what salt was which in the study. There are some preliminary results released, but they're gonna take another month or two to tabulate the data (Weighing growth of sponges during the experiment, that kinda exciting work that does need to be done)...

The official results or documented part of the study will be released in a few months. They said they had some thing like 87 pages of spread sheet data to go through as well as some additional spectral analysis that needed to be done.

However these are the preliminary results. The list Serk posted shows which tank had which salt. If you go to the links provided above you will find the tank pictures. Use you own judgement because your mileage may vary.

For me I am looking to test some of the new RedSea Pro Coral salt that was just released. It is supposed to be designed for R0 water and mixes up when at 35sg to 450Ca, ph 8.2 - 8.4 and alk at 2.2 - 2.5meq/l. We shall see.

I have had some issues with low numbers coming from the ReefCrystals slat and not sure I like having to add all the addatives to get it where it needs to be. As it turns out there are several members on this forum that have had the same results.

The new Red Sea Pro were too new to make it into the study, and thus were NOT part of it... The Red Sea in the study was the "regular" Red Sea...

Now, that doesn't mean the new Red Sea Pro isn't a great salt, it just wasn't part of the study...

I don't know if ther eis enough interest it may be worth it. From the specs it looks good.

Brian I think they were the ones that changed the formula and that is why they ended the study. I think this new salt is replaceing the current line up. That was the impression I got from talking with the Red Sea rep.

But do not take my word for it.

We moved them to a different room that could be locked and secured, which was still temperature controlled. There is no reason that would invalidate the study.

We ended it because we couldn't get a replacement fish from the same brood, and one of the salt brands was difficult to obtain. Either way, we had over 10 months data, 9 months of it were with organisms.

I missed this particular study at MACNA (too darn early..GRRR) but this was covered at the conference. I am not aware of this info posted online as of yet. As I understood it they have a little more testing to do before they publish the study."]We definitely have a while before anything is published, and in fact there will be several papers generated from this because there is so much data, especially if we do some follow up spectal analyses.

Cory you should really look at the Red Sea Pro Coral version. If it meets the marketing (advertised numbers) I think I will be switching.

that means I am in trouble cause I have used instant ocean for 3 years. Cyano bac seems to be my only problem. As long as it works for me should I continue to use this or should I consider changing. I really don't want to mess my tank up!

I used Instant Ocean also. I actually changed after the Macna last year to Reef Crystals and have been using it ever since. That was because I liked the readings I got when I tested the free sample I picked up at Macna. You can always pick up Reef Crystals mix them half and half till you are out of Instant Ocean and then go with Reef Crystals after that. You won't have a problem switching salts like that.
