maroon clownfish

I saw a maroon clownfish yesterday that had only one solid white bar on the front half of its body and two beginnings of white bars directly on top and on bottom in the middle and back half of his body.

The WSM was about 2.2-2.5 inches long so it just maybe a juve' still, but not really sure. I also think it could be misbarred.

I am interested in this fish very much right now and its being sold for only $15. The guy said he's had him for about 1.5 years.....

I think it looks really cool the way it is, but I also know that possibly the white bars will fill in on the back side over time, but then again maybe not.

It would be awesome if they started to turn gold after a while....

He's presented it as a white-striped maroon, and has been more than honest about the whole deal. I lucked out when I went up to P-O-R in bedford yesterday. I asked an associate if they ever get maroon's in and he started telling me about his own that he is looking to sell....score.

Thanks for help Matt. I like the misbarred look on this lil guy so its all good.

Well, it will be about 3-4 weeks before I add any fish to my tank but I would like to know what you guys think about my stock list.

I would ideally like to add the following over the next 3-4 months depending on how well things go. Oh, and I do have a QT/HT tank, I learned the hard way with a ich outbreak from my first LFS fish purchase.

Oh and this is a 45g corner style tank with about 15-20#'s of LR and another 25-30 pounds of rock from marcorocks.com or somesuch.

1) I would like either a black capped basslet or a bi-color blenny

2) Wrasse, either six-line or yellow coris. I've read they eat some zoa pest and I like them.

3) Another maroon, but the juv would be added last. I just dont want the pair to "rule the roost" right off the bat. It will be hard enough keeping one maroon from being overly aggressive.

4) The last guy I may add or may not depending on how I feel would be a lawnmower blenny or other algae grazer.

And thats it. Thats all the fish I want in there. I think 3-4 total should be good, OR if you guys have any schooling fish suggestions I would listen to those too.

Thank you!

Cool, thanks again Matt. Yeah, I am not sure if I will want a 5th fish in there or not so thats why he was last. I am going to have ample clean up crew and lately I have thoroughly enjoyed watching the 3 emeralds I have currently work there way all over the rock work.

The funny thing is I have one with 4 legs, 8 legs and 6 legs. I bought them at different times and they were all different. Not sure why, well I know why, but its funny. The 4-legged guy is much more nimble than the others....or at least quicker to flee.

I could be wrong but I am also under the impression their bars change from white to gold at a fairly young age so it may not really be a GSM. Just my $0.02 said:
We bought our GSM pair in April '06 and they were both very white. The male still has a signficatant amount of white on him. The female is definately yellow, but not a deep dark color yet. They were about 1-1.5" when I got them.

awesome, that does leave some room for a wish. I really wanted a maroon clown, the gold-stripe would be a bonus, so I am really happy either way.

And his mis-barred striping looks cooler the more I watch him.

What size are they now?

The female is about 2.5-3" and the male about 2-2.5" I'm awful at eyeballing sizes. I've been very pleased with them. I was concerned they wouldn't pair up, but they hit it off after about a day of the female informing the little male of his place. I recently added an anemone and she lets him hang out in it and join in the fun. They're fun to watch, especially now that they have an anemone, but make huge mess of the sandbed.

Mine is probably about the same size as yours then about 2-2.5" so thats interesting that yours are still coloring up.

Mess of the sandbed? Do they like to play around in the sand or are you talking about the placement of the 'nem?

The only reason I ask is that this will be a reef tank and I already have a couple powerheads that have, uh, rearranged some of my substrate. I don't want a sandstorm to happen if they play in the sand. I may stick with just one if thats the case.

And thank you very much for your information Meli

They were playing in the sandbed before the anemone. They play in it less now that they have the anemone. Pre-nem, they killed a couple of GSP frags that I had on the sand. Kinda my fault for not moving the GSP to a different location. If you're planning to add an anemone and it happens to stay up high in the tank, you shouldn't have to much of a problem (assuming he'll play in it).

I think at this point if yours is about the same size as mine and he's not showing any signs of yellow, he's going to be white striped. I was looking at my male a little closer today and he's obviously yellow, he's just a light yellow with good amount of white on the outside of the stripes (at least compared to what he'll be as an adult and his companion).
