Mangroves in a display tank

As I am finalizing the details for my new lagoon tank, I am considering a few mangroves around the rock basin to create a more natural appearance .... the water will be 12" deep ... with a sand bed around 2-3" ... is this a bad idea for a display tank ... i.e. will the mangrove take over or the roots become problematic. also, how does one "plant" the mangrove - thanks.

The mangroves will work great the roots won't take over as they usually go straight down to sand bed. To plant the just make sure the leaves and stem are out of water and the roots will grow down to the sand bed! Let me know if you need some I can ship to u I have about 30 ready to go next week

thanks ... I checked out reefcentral and there are some really cool thread ... again, I am hoping the use of the par30 led bulbs will really pan out nicely ... I should be able to direct some nice 10K light on those and not affect the overall color of the tank ... we shall see - thanks again

just be sure not to put them in the sand, they arent to be planted like a regular plant. as silveradobobby mentioned, the roots will grow to the sand on their own.

I had mine in a display until they grew in to the lights - I liked them in there, though! I would be concerned about the roots working in to any silicone joints and spreading them out, and starting a leak. I keep mine in an acrylic sump, so don't think that will be a problem, since the joints are welded.

I read that somewhere not sure where?

actually, that was addressed in one of the reefcentral threads... the roots go the path of least resistance ...so, they would rather grow through the sand than into the silicone
