Mandarin Goby needs help(lost him)

I noticed day before yesterday that his tail looked damaged I thought that it was just from him hitting it on the rocks now today His tail is completely gone. I have been watching my gobies really close and unless it is during the nite they are not fighting and both of them are feeding good any recommedations?

This sounds like fin rot, are you sure your overall water quality is OK. Check your salinity. Mandarin's are not a good candidate for QT's but if your's eats frozen as you say, then you could give that a try. You cannot treat your mandarin with copper but I think there are other antibiotics that can be used. I'm sure someone on here will know.

Cheers!

I have been reading on this fin rot with the mandarin goby and most of the items that I have read says that this is mainly caused by stress. So what do I need to do he seemed to be so happy. This is the one that I won at meeting with the raffle tickets. I acclimated him for over an hour. I put in probably a cup of water every fifteen minutes taking water out of the bag after the first addition. Other than his tail being gone he looks healthy. He still has an appetite but he says hidden under a rock now where he used to come out all the time and swin around the rocks and such. Any advise would be appreciated.

Do you have any fish that may be picking on the mandarin and are you positive that your salinity is not too high. Water quality is a stressor for these fish also. Make sure it's not breathing hard, check out it's eye's and make sure they don't have a sunken look.

Cheers!

This morning I checked mag, calcium, phosphate, alk, salinity, ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, and ph everything was great could use a little calcium that was a bit low at a 300ppm and I keep it at a 450. my water is really good. His eyes are not sunk in and now his body at the tip of tail is turning white and his top fin is going away. Ron I just want to take a moment to thank you for time and help with this issue. I have cried most of the day cause I don't know what to do this has been my most serious issue and you seem to be the only helpful one today. just your concern has helped ME more than you will know my fish are like my kids

Debbie,

You are very sensative in your hobby. Sometimes Debbie, it is a hit and miss on a lot fish. I hope you understand that a lot of fish are under a lot of stress from the ocean-> collection period-> distributors-> lfs->raffle ticket->owner. You have done your best. Ron is a great guy that has also ran into problems with his first manderian golby. He probably understand how you feel since this has happen to him recently.

I do NOT have a refractometer yet
Salinity might have been the problem yesterday when I checked it was at 1.024 and so I decided to go ahead for the heck of it today and it said it was 1.019 NOT GOOD

Yeah..don't feel bad it's nothing that you are doing wrong, sometimes it just takes one more move or something to send them over the edge. It would be good if you could remove it to a seperate area but that in itself could be bad at this point. Have you tried soaking the food in garlic extract before feeding, since it's eats frozen foods, that might help. You can add garlic extract drops to the tank also without harm. Reduce your lighting schedule a couple of hours also will help to lower stress.

Cheers!

well I just left there. Her sg was 1.024 . He still has a little bit of the "ribs" that run through the tail and a little bit of fin in there. We put him in the refugium. Hope he gets better.

Man, I really need to invest in a refractometer. I can test my tank 3 times in a row and get 3 different readings with the hydrometer. Hopefully he pulls through!
