Make this into hob refugium?

[I have 2 of these that I got talked into buying many years ago. They worked ok for my FW tanks but certainly not the greatest. Can they be made into HOB refugium? I would need to block the one opening that I've marked. The bioballs & sponges area would be where I'd put sand. Should I not even bother with the airstone/chamber for skimming?

[you could definitely use that as a refugium. Just like your pic…block up that little spot and fill it up with some live sand and some macro. What size tank are you using it on and does it have a skimmer? I don’t know if that little “skimmer” section would do any well other than helping with oxygen levels.]

[I want to have a bigger refugium/sump underneath--going to convert a regular tank I have sitting around to do that. The only skimmer I have is the old one from way back--Visi Jet I think (junk probably). I'll be doing all of this on my 75 gal.

Wanted to see if I should bother with this HOB filter. It probably would be good for a small aquarium?

If I used the airstone/skimmer, would I have issues with air bubbles collecting in the refug? Is that why Marc has the 3 baffles on his to get rid of air bubbles?]

[I am not too sure about the air bubbles...to tell you the truth, the "skimmer" thing probablly won't do much anyways. For a 75 gallon tank, something like this won't make much of an effect, but it's better than nothing. Something like that would be perfect on a smaller tank. If you think about selling one of them, I might be interested.]

[Matt--I hoard my extras but I will remember that you might be interested in one or I would trade one for something that I need for FOWLR setup.

Thanks]
