Magnetic or Electric?

hey guy, can anyone tell me which ballast is better, Magnetic or Electric? what are the main pros and cons? thinking about getting a new ballast, mine makes a slight buzzing noise and puts out a good amount of heat. Also what's the difference between probe and pulse start?

IMO electronic ballast are superior, less weight, less room needed for them and less heat generated are some of the biggies( I love my Icecaps). Here is a good article explaining probe vs pulse start bulbs. http://tinyurl.com/3d3vtf

i have pfo electronic ballasts and blue wave magnetic ballats
running 12k reeflux

on my 12k reeflux i like the color better with my blue wave ballasts
 
I have PFO Magnetic , icecap electronic. The PFO Magnetic seems to have better color and brighter with my hqi bulbs for some reason.
 
A standard magnetic ballast can only fires probe bulb.
Electronic, hqi, pulse ballast can fire any bulb, probe, pulse, hqi , de or se. Personally, I won't use probe start bulb on these ballasts, pulse start bulb on e-ballast/pulse ballast or de bulb on hqi ballast /hqi e-ballast is way to go. I believe (but not sure) so called hqi e-ballast generates more watts than regular e-ballast.

Here is pic of 250w XM probe and 175w pulse start. Can you spot the difference?

thanks Matt, i am probably going to hook this ballast up with the reeflux buys that we're getting in the GB.
 
i agree with you on the CS part that IceCap offer, i also own the IC 660. the only reason why i am going with the ARO 250W is it's under $90.
