magnesium in calcium reactors

I have read recently about more people adding a magnesium supplement to their calcium reactors to boost the mg levels ... has anyone had any luck with this or have a good read on it from a reputable source? I was considering adding a small second chamber with some calcium media to bring up the pH and then some magnesium in there as well ... thanks.

I think Pampee was running Dolomite when he was using his Ca Reactor. I don't know of anyone else in the club off hand who does but I am sure someone is using it. I know there has been plenty of discussion on RC about it, so it does work. The trick is finding the proper amount. As far as putting it into the second chamber, I'm not sure the pH will be low enough in there to dissolve it at the rate you need. I'd be more inclined to stick with the Calcium media in there and do a combo Ca/Dolomite in the primary chamber. The second chamber is really a low level dosing chamber compared to the primary. It may be enough though...

I believe it's dolomite that people are using and ron(bimmerz) had some for sale and may be able to help. I put mine in my cr chamber above my calcium media.

I used ZEOVit mag in mine. Once I got my Mg level up to 1300 I put it in my reactor and it lasts about 9 months. It maintains the Mg nicely, but if you start adding more coral that use up Mg more you need to add more than 10%

thanks for the reply ... on the second chambers, does the pH rise that fast from one chamber to the next?? I was thinking one could put only magnesium media in the second chamber to make it easier to use??

I had my zeomag in my second chamber where the pH was slightly higher than it was in the first chamber. I kept mine around 7.0 which was the measurement of the pH from the first reactor to the second, not the effluent. I had one of those pH probe Ts

what i did when i had my cal reactor was run gen x media in first chamber and koralinth media with zeomag on top. running a second chamber raises the effluent ph about a point coming out and into your tank.
