Magnesium additive in CA reactors

I thouught I read somewhere that some reefers are dosing a Mg additive via their CA reacors. Was that you Chris (chrisrush)?

What is it, how has it impacted your Mg levels (raising and maintaining) and where do you get it.

I'm struggling to keep my MG levels up (1200 on average). I'm reluctant to use epsom salts due to sulfate levels and I don't have access to any Mag or Dow flake.

Steve,
That was me. I bought some zeomag from Captive Oceans or FinsReef. I can't remember where though.

It has really helped keep my mg levels around 1300. I added about 10% to my reactor, which on this new reactor was about 1.5 lbs, since I added 15 lbs of reactor media.

If you use that zeomag, you need to bring your mg levels up, it will keep them stable but won't raise them, much like a ca reactor.

Epsom salt will be fine for now, just don't use it all the time. Kent-M is another good product, but it's pretty expensive.

George, look up Randy Holmes-Farley about epsom salt and sulfates. I can't find the article, but due to the mg sulfate (epsom salt), it is better to use a different mg supplement, such as mg anhydrous, or mix them at a 1:5 ratio.

Here is a Magnesium article by Randy Holmes Farley out in July he talks about the epson salts about 3/4 down.

When I first bought some Mag Flake, I added it to my calcium reactor on top of the ARM. As soon as I turned on the reactor, that stuff literally disolved in seconds. 15 seconds later, there was none to be seen.

I never did that again.

I just mix it up in a cup, and pour it in or drip it in via a Kent doser. Last test I ran was 1380, a few weeks ago. Rick told me I need to be mixing it with Epson's Salt to get the right ionic balance, but I haven't read that article yet nor needed to dose any more.
