Mag 12 Question

I am in the process of getting my 120g tank up and running. I have a Mag 12 as my return pump with a ball valve on my return line. I have flex tubing with no elbows. With the valve fully open, it is more flow than I want...at least initially. If I partially close the ball valve to reduce the flow, will it hurt my pump in the longrun (i.e. put detrimental stress on the pump)?
