Are you guys planning to attend MACNA this year? It is in 179 days! Sign up now, because you'll have a great time.

I just got back from Atlanta. Here's the hotel that the event will be held at:

And standing in front of the Georgia Aquarium, you can see it is within walking distance - 5 minutes roughly.

MACNA is in September, and every hobbyist should figure out how to attend if at all possible. Your knowledge level will be raised significantly by the 21 speakers that present during those three days. It is slightly similar to Next Wave, except 1000 people attend and everyone has a blast. Each year, more vendors show off their products in probably 100 different booths, and are there to answer your questions. Often you can buy what you want right on the spot, sometimes at a discount.

Additionally, because the Georgia Aquarium is so close, you'll have the experience of a lifetime. If you like the Dallas World Aquarium, the G.A. is going to blow you away. The main exhibit is 6.3 million gallons!! It is roughly a football field long (front to back) with 4 whale sharks that vary in length from 16' to 22'.

In this picture, you can barely make out the seam running vertically above the speakers head. The acrylic is 24 inches thick! Click on the next three images to see the full 1000 pixel width image.

Here's one of the whale sharks cruising the tank. On Saturday night, the gala dinner is being prepared by Wolfgang Puck. The banquet room will be at eye level with the whale sharks, which will be unforgettable. There are two males & two females. Once these sharks reach 36' long, the mating should begin.

This exhibit is not one to be missed. Keith took me there around 3pm Wednesday, and the aquarium closed at 5pm. It was so worth it. Entry fees are $27 each, and there are rules about what you can bring in. My guess is that they are trying to avoid vandalism and pollution to the animals.

I'll be posting more pictures and some video soon. In the meantime, really consider if you can pull off attending this year's MACNA in Altanta, since you'll really get a double-whammy of a deal.

Aren't you flying in a day early or staying a day late Wes? If so, you'll have time. You need about 3 hours, I'd guess. Make sure you know when they'll be open though.

yea, day early, but if there was going to be time or an event to go see it during the conf i didnt want to waste the extra time...i can do it wed i guess...anyone else gonna be there a day early and wanna swing in the aq?

You can go Wednesday or Thursday. I'll be posting more pictures soon so you can get a good idea of what you'll be looking forward to.

Fun Facts
It took 1.8 million pounds of sea salt to make the Ocean Voyager exhibit as salty as the ocean.

The 6.3 million gallons of water in Ocean Voyager can be filtered in 60 minutes.

The pipes that filter the water in the Ocean Voyager exhibit stretch 61 miles, or the length of I-285 around Atlanta.

The whale sharks in Ocean Voyager may grow to be up to 25 to 35 feet in length.

I've tried to schedule this since I heard it will be in ATL but need help. Here's my questions :

1. I am looking to stay Friday-Sunday. What usually goes on these dates am I missing something and should move my dates back or forward ?

2. The hotels are decent price IMO so I'll probably get a room by myself. But my wife and kids may come . 199.00 for 2 days

3. The airfair is whats getting me right now. I just checked and 225.00 round trip was what I got quoted.

Albert, you can definitely arrive Friday morning in Atlanta. MACNA starts around 1 p.m. that day. The MARTA will take you from the airport to the hotel for $1.25

You'll need a room for Friday & Saturday night. The conference continues until Sunday afternoon, which is why I fly back Sunday evening. Some of our members will fly back on Monday instead.

The flight price sounds about right with taxes included.

If you attend MACNA and it is offered, take the behind the scenes tours.

The filtering is actually rather simple. They use sand filters and a large wet-dry setup. Have a few very large protein skimmers.

Lots of pumps and pipes and computer monitoring and control.

if you do, maybe i could pitch in for the use of some of your space?!

im taking a late flight out pampee...i think it leaves around 8pm

So that's why you missed the last meeting. I'd rather be there too. Gotta make a trip out there some day.

Mark

The Aquarium hours need to be verified so you don't arrive too late on Thursday to miss your opportunity to visit. Of course, you could head over as soon as they open on Friday morning before MACNA starts.

The raffle and talks usually are done by 3 to 4pm. So I fly out at 6pm or later so as not to have to miss part of the final day only because I had to rush to the airport. According to the current schedule on their site, it is over by 3pm.
