Lowering the specfic gravity of salt ?

This is a dumb question, but what do you do ? just add fresh Ro water to salt water youve cycled out ? Do you do it in small increments, or in large changes. Thanks. (btw trying to lower the gravity of my tank thats cycling. )

Generally to lower it, you just make your water change water a slightly lower SG, and do your water change with it.

On a full system, you wanna lower the SG really slow, usually...

And just curious, why are you wanting to lower your SG?

Braedon,
You mentioned before that your SG was at 1.030 which is odd since you also said that you purchased all of your water from a LFS. Usually most LFS's keep their water around 1.021SG, were you topping off with saltwater to get it that high? As Brian mentioned that is how you do it, not a big deal since you are cycling but you might extend your cycle.

**edit** Remember as water evaporates, your salinity increases since salt doesn't evaporates, that's why most people go with a auto top-off in order to keep their salinity constant.

Are you doing water changes dring your cycle, if so why?

Cheers!

Are you sure you are getting an accurate measurement of the salinity?

That's a good point Marc, since I got a refractometer I kinda forgot how inaccurate those hydrometers can be. Maybe he should take a sample to his LFS to verify?

No, I got a refractometer from Jacob, when i got my rock. The Lfs I went too, kept mine high so i could get out all the bad critters. Now that i have added hermit crabs and snails, I remembered I needed to lower it back down. Yeah, Im doing to slowly, its down to 1.028 now. My cycle is almost over. Im sure. Last 4 days I have had no ammonia, nitrates, or nitrites. Ive had others check with there tests, and local fish stores. They say its all good, but Im waiting another week.

Ps Not doing water changes during a cycle...thats a big no no. Im adding fresh R/o water for evaporation then adding a little more R/o water. Some how its working.

You have zero nitrates...hmmm. What did you use to start your cycle? Did you see the ammonia spike followed by a nitrite spike followed by a nitrate spike, do you have brown stuff(diatoms) started to form all over. It's a good thing your rock came out of a running system , very little die off, quick to no cycle. If all your parameters are zero then no need to wait, some say you are good to go, I would personally do a 20% WC, re-check the essentials, Ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, PH, Ca, Phosphates, Alkalinity at a minimum. Remember this - if you are not testing something then don't dose for it so hold off on the stuff you have and let your tank "marinate" for a bit. Once you start adding critters then that use up Ca etc., then adjust as necessary. Get the easy stuff first till you tank stabilizes(2-3 months minimum). I saw you eying that clown fish, you can buy mine if you want it. I can give you some macroalgae for your fuge if you have one and also a kenya tree.

Congrat's

What kind of clownfish ? Thanks. So you would do a water change ?

Ammonia: 0.0
Nitrite: 0.0
Nitrates: 0.0

SG: 1.027

Temp: 80.4

Ph 8.4

:D

Hi Braedon
The clownfish is gone already. You will need a couple of more test kits, alkalinity and phosphate for sure right now. I would do a 25% WC to bring the SG and parameters in-line and make sure your essential elements are replenished. This is your temp with a fan running?

Tuesday, I will do the water change and get those needed test kits. Until then I'm mointoring everything. Yes that temp is with the lights and fans on.
