Losing fish

I did a routine 10% change tonight and within a few minutes of completion, had a chromis die and a blue devil disappear. Now about an hour later our yellow tang is about dead also. Checked all the usual chemical levels and nothing is wrong. I also changed a filter sock and scraped some algae off of the back wall. Any ideas?

For starters we would need all the water parameters listed here....and I do mean all parameters...temp/alc/etc.....any additives you have, any dosers you have running.

Levels are Ammonia = 0, nitrite = 0, nitrate < 5, dkh =7, ca =420, phos = 0 and Tds at the rodi =0, temp during the change was 78.8-79.0, ph = 8.0, dose kalk
salinity between tank and new water was 1.023, temp was matched. Apex didn't report any significant changes during the water change (no ph spike or major temp swing)
Pump was off for 10 min
Did not siphon sand
I did scrape some algae off the back wall. My best theory is that it had something to do with scraping the back wall.

some algae when scraped gives off poison....could also be that the water has too much chlorine as they are starting to put more in the water to fight off the bacteria....also....if the o2 content of the water drops you will have death in the tank...I almost had this and its hard to spot you really have to watch your critters....I now always run an air pump in my sumps to pump more air into the water because in the summertime I really notice a buildup of CO2.

How are you measuring the salinity? What salt are you using? I would check for Chlorine as mentioned above.
This is weird.

Using a refractometer. Reef Crystals (and I was in the middle of a bag so likely not a bad batch). Does chlorine show as tds or do you have to test another way?

No, I don't believe a TDS meter will give any indication of chlorine. It doesn't impact the conductivity of the water which is how the TDS meter works. You'll need to test for that some other way.

When was the refractometer last calibrated? Any other loses other than fish? snails, crabs, shrimp, corals?

Not sure when last calibrated but the new water matched the existing tank water. No other loses other than 3 fish (chromis, yellow tang, and blue devil damsel)

Just got home and my missing blue devil is out and looks healthy. He disappeared last night during the water change.

What other inhabitants do you have in the tank? Is it possible that there is a predator in there? Mantis?

Why didn't anyone bring up the filter sock? Was it new? did you rinse it? Was it recently washed in a dishwasher or washing machine??
