Little Help Here

Hey, I'm kinda new again if you will. I have been out of it for about 10 years as far as reef goes. Now I have found you geniuses here at the forum I have a few questions. I have aquired a 90 gal it looks like anyway... Dims are outside 48"l x 18"d x 24" TALL. I THINK THAT MAKES A 90 RIGHT? Light looks like a hood by JBJ 1 blue 32" and 1 white 32", if memory serves PC's I think. Filter is a Sealife wet-dry with blue bio balls run by a mag 12. Protien Skimmer is a double CPR bakpak. I used the old crushed coral and fake decor and the old bio balls when I set it up. It had been running for about a month and a half
Ammonia is 0
PH is 8.2
Nitrate is at 0
Heres the odd part Nitrite is at 5+
Any suggestions on the nitrite
Also is this good enough for a reef set up? What else do I need to get? Is it time for live rock yet?

Thanks

Bri

ok. sounds like your water is cycling, do you have any fish? anyway wait for the nitrite to test 0 and nitrate will climb, do a sml 10 -15% water change then test you should get better results. You may need a long sump to help supress bubbles and although your skimmer will work you may want to get a larger one you cant really go by the gallon ratings. also if you are keeping corals you may need more light like 4 65 w pc minimum or 4 vho,, or 2 vho and 1 mh and so on. Your return pump seems a little strong, usually you want alot of flow inside the tank and not alot of "flow thru". hope this helps. casey

No it has not had any fish or live rock in it at all. The ammonia already spiked and droped as well as the ph looks like it setteled in, thats what odd about the Nitrite. What kind if return pump would you suggest? Also how do you extend a sump? Ya think I could find someone that wants a big pump like taht to trade for smaller ones. Maybe a couple for flow or something?

How old was the setup you acquired? You say that you reused the crushed coral from the previous set-up?

I would have the Nitrites retested from a different test kit. if you're looking at putting in uncure/not completely cured live rock I would add it as soon as possible and get rid of the fake decorum as this will help your biological filtration
