Lightning Fish Project

yep... It is interesting to watch, because as they release more from the clutch, each one will likely go for less than it's the one before it.

Whats crazy is that there is still over 4 days of bidding to go on this fish! I should have posted this earlier. We could have done an over/under pool for fun! Winner gets a free pink skunk clown worth $10 LOL! (this is just a joke, I am not advocating starting a coral casino or anything). :)

So keep your thoughts coming, and also post what you think this fish's total price will be in 4+ days.

I'd say its about capped out. It has 39 bids but I bet it's from no more ten 4 people. I'd say 3900.00

Matt's done an incredible job and hopefully these go out to some other breeders who can keep up the good work. With 4 days to go, I wouldn't be surprised if these go for over 10 grand each and I wouldn bet ORA is doing some of the bidding.

My wife and I were talking about this last night. We both hope ORA gets at least one of them. There are some really good breaders of clownfish out there and I hope that some of them get them as well. Not to mention Matt isn't letting every fish go. So I believe he will continue to work on this project as well. Regardless of how much they go for, I hope that in 5 years I can pick up a couple for under $200. [smilie=dull.gif]

I'm going to have to root for ORA or Sea and Reef too. I'm sure they'll have the facility to mass produce some of these gorgeous fish and hopefully bring them down to affordable prices.

Well, with still just over three days to go on the bidding fish #1 on the block is at $5300. I will be honest and say that when my wife and I were discussing this I thought the "lightning patterned" fish would go for approx $4500, so I am gonna be WAY off on my guess.

I'm taking a serious look into potentially bidding on some of the later released ones. Matt has a full inventory with pictures posted on the project blog of the fish that will be put up for auction and there's some nice looking ones.

I fully expect that all of the fish showing the lightning pattern are going to go for over $2,000. That's a lot of money, but with another PNG mate, that's a good chance of the offspring continuing to have the pattern show up. If someone crosses one with a non-PNG mate, I would be shocked if it was preserved.

David, I see by your sig that you are a breeder. What type of issues do you run into when you are breeding fish from the same hatch? Just wondering?

I've been following the lighting project for some time. I do hope they get into the hands of responsible breeders that can one day bring the price down. Maybe one day there will be a black ice lightning clowns.

It depends on how long they've been line bred. Physical deformities are a lot more prevalent with offspring that are bred back with parents/siblings for multiple generations. In the case of the lightning maroons, we have both parents from the wild. The F1 siblings can breed together with remarkably low possibility of dangerous recessive genes coming out. I think down to F3 siblings you'd probably be okay. But after that, the chances of deformities and developmental issues is too great for my preferences as a hobbiest.

Getting a pair of the F1 lightning maroons to breed together would be okay in my opinion. But, I'd get an unrelated PNG maroon to breed with any F2 offspring.

David,
That's what I was wondering about. Thanks for teaching me something today. This(Lightning Project) has been very interesting to watch and read about.

We agree about hoping these fish go into the hands of someone who is going to be ready to house them and hopefully breed them properly. Our concern is that a bunch of "show-offs" will jump on this and buy one just to say they have one with no intention of breeding them.

Price jumped last night to $6100 for the first fish.

Another one sold tonight, apparently to the same bidder. http://www.ebay.com/itm/F1-PNG-Lightning-Maroon-Clownfish-BZLM1-/161051119894

It will be interesting to see who ends up with the fish and what # of them are breeders. I am totally blown away that this fish went for over 10k.
