Lighting question

I put this in lighting section, but I really think it's a newbie question:
tank is 42 stretch, lighting is 4 x 39 watt (2 actinic), and 2 x 96 watt PC (one actinic).

I have one timer for now and my schedule is as follows:

I usually leave for work around 5 am and turn on both blues to check things out

My timer turns the 10,000s on at 11 am

I turn off the 10,000 at about 8 pm and the blues at about 9 pm

My question is....am I having the blues on to long? I have seen where people turn them on about 1 hour before the 10,000s, but as stated, I like to check things out before I leave.

comments?

Thanks!

Tj

If I read this right, you’re turning on the actinic @ 5am, and turning them off @ 9pm?
If that's correct, I think the actinic are on too long.
Many people usually aim for about 6-8 hrs for the entire light cycle.
You may start seeing excess algae growth when you go too long, so just keep an eye on it... but personally, I would reduce it.
Another factor to consider is heat. Keep an eye on your temp, especially during these hot summer months.

As far as how when the actinic turn on before the main lights, 1/2 hr to an hour is fine. The actinic don't really help coral growth; they are more for aesthetic purposes.

Best of luck!

I only have one timer so with the daylight well before 11am when my "day" lights come on, I have both actinic and day lights coming on then. Then when I get a chance, I'll get a timer and take your advice.

Thx
