Lighting question!!

if i do 2 MH 250 Watts 20K bulbs on a fowlr 150 gallon tank , do i have to get a chiller ? ... it will be under a canopy , so will the lighting heat up water too much

Kind of hard to answer that question, since hood ventilation and ambient air temperature comes into play. I have no hood on my 34 gallon tank with a 150watt MH pendant and it would probably benefit from a chiller.

it has vent holes in back , and built in fans in each ballast for the MH ... i havent ordered them yet just wanted a opinon from diffrent people who have used 20k MH !! i dont want to buy a chiller , so if its gunna cause me to get a chiller i dont want them

i have a 210 with 3x250watt MH's and do not use a chiller. i use fans and evaporative cooling to keep my tank between 79-81 degrees consistantly (i use a controller). it can be done but you lose a lot more water this way which is fine with me as i have an ATO and my own RODI.

yeah i dont mind loosing water , i like to add a gallon every other day anyways , keeps fish happy !! lol ... im just fixing to upgrade to a 150 gallon from my 90 gallon , and love the look of the 250 watt 20k lighting !

Toping off a gallon of water a day or even five gallons has nothing to do with water quality and fish happiness...the poo is still left behind

ok , saltpro !! ..... well it may not keep your fish happy , but it keeps mine happy !! they get all excited every time i add water , worry about your own tank brosuf

If we want answers and opinions, we gotta take the good and the bad and the ugly. Yes you will probably need to Chill Out with a Chiller....Your tank I mean. [smilie=lol.gif]

thanks , Reef nuts , ... [smilie=rofl.gif] .... im not gunna do halides ! i dont want to invest in a chiller ! ... so ill probably go with t5 or vho

I feel you... My set up was bought used and came with MHs, so being that my house doesn't have Central air, I knew I needed a chiller. Bought a used one(thinking it was a deal [smilie=dull.gif] ) for 160 bucks that worked for 1 month and broke down in peak summer. Now I'm looking at getting a new one !! Between the Mhs and the chiller my light bill went substantially higher.

well i deffinatley dont want a higher light bill !!! ... soo ill find something .... i gotta get the tank up and cycling for a few months any how , i just found a good deal on ebay for some MH , so wanted to know if i got them , do i need a chiller ... but now ik !! ... thanks guys
