Lighting question newbie

I am setting up a 54 G corner bowfront and I will have sunpod 150W MH and T 2*24 W sitting on the glasstop.

The glasstop is on top of the canopy. Can the lights crack or dammage the glasstop?

thanks for your help

Yea, that MH can get real hot and would most likely crack the glass if in contact with it or very close. Also, a glass top can hold in heat and reduce evaporation. If you can, and are keeping creatures that don't have a jumping problem, I'd look into getting that fixture hung or on legs over the tank without the glass.

Thanks a lot guys. I have a weird tank shape ( corner bowfront). It's very nice looking but nightmare to fit the lights. I am trying to put the mounting bracket on a support.

:D

Yes they will crack the glass top. I cracked mine, but was able to save the fixture before it fell in the water. I would take the Sunpod off the top immediately.

You could make custome supports over the tank using 1/2" glass, wood, or metal. I had custom glass supports made by addison glass and secured them with super glue.

I eventually did the DIY light hanger kit(see last months reefkeeping article on RC). This setup allows me to raise and lower the light fixture. I think you will be happier with the stilts so you can hang your T5's as well.

I would suggest you go the metal route and cut notches to secure them on the rim of your tank. You could have this fabricated and painted by yourself within a an hour.

You will have better control over the temp, more evaportion and fish losses with the open top.

Thanks for the advise, I am not happy putting the light on the glasstop. Is there anyway I can take a look at your tank for ideas since you have the same. I am horrible handyman!!!!!

thanks so much

Thanks a lot. I am debating between custom glass support and hang on bracket.... your tank look good and thanksfor the building thread.

You can borrow mine for a few weeks if you want then you will have a template of the shape. I have an Oceanic tank. I would give or sell them to you but I may need them when I sell my tank because I do not have a cannopy.

If i can borrows yours for 1 week so I can see if it's the right choice, I would love it. I am close to DNA let me kow when it's convenient for you.

thanks again

bleuazur09,

I need my supports back promptly. (See PM message for drop off address) I think this is the third time I have asked you.

Thanks,

Spence
