Lighting from Hydroponics Store?

Hey Guys,

I was thinking of something the other day, why spend all that money on name brand aquarium lighting? There has got to be a cheaper way to light your tank.

So today I went by a Hydroponics store here locally and I was actually quite surprised at some of the stuff they had. They have pendant fixtures with aluminum reflectors for like $45. They have 24" T5HO strip lights for like $30. They have timers, they have submersible pumps, bulbs, etc.

I don't know if this is news to everyone else, but I had never considered it before. I may be trying something out from there for a fuge light here soon.

Anyone else ever considered looking at a Hydroponics store for aquarium lighting and/or pumps, or has anyone ever actually bought any of the aforementioned stuff from one?

A lot of the reef lighting comes from the hydroponic's world, except for the color spectrum of the bulb's we use. Some things are purpose built to fit our tanks etc, but a lot of thing's can be used or substituted, a lot of times it comes down to asthetic's and what you like.

Cheers,

Majority of saltwater eqpt is crossover from horticulture. Metal halide ballasts are the same. Even kessil led started out as horticulture then ventured into aquarium side.

Problem you will find just like in the aquarium side is there is cheap stuff and there is a reason why as they will not last.

Sunlight supply sunblaze fixture is a great t5 fixture that has a proven track record for being a hydroponic piece eqpt that works in a salt water aquarium with good results and reliability.

It is good fixture it uses true individual reflectors which you need on a t5 fixture on a reef tank as it will put the most par directed into the tank. One of my good friend ran that fixture over a frag tank he could grow sps lps and softies. Only problem is that it has only one cord for all the t5 bulbs so you can't do sunrise sunset effect.
