Lighting for my 175 gal reef tank

Im looking for a new/use lighting system for my 175 gal reef tank. Right now I have 4 VHO lights but one burned up on me the other night. I started smelling burning I didnt know what the smell was for a few hours untill I went to feed the fish. Thats when I saw one of the lights had burned up. Im not sure what caused this but I dont want any of the others to do the same thing. I really dont know anything about lighting so im going to need some help with this. So please any info would help alot.

Tank dimensions would help with suggestions as spread will be different for VHO/MH and LEDs. Also do you have a budget you are trying to work with and what are you trying to keep coral-wise?

Ill check the tank dimensions when I get home. As for budget I dont want to spend a whole bunch seeing that I just bout a XXL blonde naso tang and a new reef octopus skimmer. So those two things put me back some money and I wasnt planning on buying lights. I have a rose anemone, ricordea, and some zoas would like to get some Chalice's and soft corals.

I would run either a 6-8 bulb T5 setup or maybe a 3 MH setup. With the 3 MH based on the livestock you listed you could run 3 of the lumen bright pendants with 250w bulbs. Considering that you already have 4 T5s it will probably cheaper to just add 2-4 more T5s to your setup. If you are looking for an upgrade to your lighting going to a MH setup even with the T5s you have right now for actinc will yield you excellent results.

I have a dual 400w metal halide ballast, one reflector and two bulbs with only 3 months use on them for sale. I ran these on a 50" wide tank and they worked amazingly well.

The tank with the lights:

The For Sale Thread:

$225 for everything above

The reflector alone costs $115 on Marine Depot

I have a 48x18 fixture for sale with 4 t5's and over 30 LEDs. Will be plenty of light for all the livestock you mentioned and everything is only a month old.

I would like something like that but its out of my price range right now. I just bought a big blonde naso tang and a new reef octo skimmer and they put me back some cash.

Definitely understand! Good luck with your search :) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk said:
I would of had the cash but when something breaks its always right after you spend the money you had lol

Yup, that goes for stuff outside reefing as well! Just bought a new house and spent a lot on the new tank so our savings is depleted. That meant my wife had to go to te ER for nearly slicing her thumb off. Can't wait for those bills, lol.

Going to PM you an option that may be worth considering :)

Hello Friends

So i just picked up a 175gal reef tank setup, up and running for the last 8 years...

1, it has way to much live rock, i'd say well over a 1/3rd of the tank is live rock..

2, there is no live sand

only fish is a old beat up common clown fish... Some snails, sump looks clean, nothing growing in it....

This is my first saltwater tank and i have a game plan on setting it up right but want some feed back incase i am doing something wrong...

Stage 1:
was going to add 120lbs of Arag-Alive Live sand to the tank, Also the live rock looks really bad... So i was going to add Some Liquid Reef and some Reef Solution to help boost the live rock. Then i was going to wait a few days and add 10 hard Coral frags along with some Coral-Vital, then wait 7 days adding supplements as needed, then add 4 Banded Coral Shrimp...

Stage 2:
If all looks well after a month, i was going to add a portion of Chaetomorpha Algae, 1 Bubble Anenome, 1 sebae Anenome, 2 Clown fish, and 4 Kauderni Cardinals

Stage 3:
again after a month, i was going to add 1 blue tang, 1 yellow tang, and 4 pink & blue spotted goby's

Stage 4:
again a month later, was going to add 1 Heniochus Black & white Butterfly Fish, and 2 Flame anglefish

Stage 5:
after another month i was going to add a pocillopara coral, and a acropora coral, and 2-4 Trapezia Crabs.

Can you post a pic of the Live Rock? If it's as bad as it sound's it may be better to just cook it. Your stage one need's to be tweaked to include testing the water to ensure the tank is cycling properly. [smilie=smile.gif] If the tank is properlcy cycled first, I see no major issue with your plan.
