lighting for a 24" tank

i am working on a new tank - 24" x 28" (the viewing pane will be 24" - different i know) ... it will be rimless and an open top - no canopy.

i had originally planned on going with t5 lighting, but, to find a decent fixture i was going to end up spending 600-700 on it. I would love to go with a nice halide pendant, but, what options are there that look good and are un-obtrusive. the luminarcs are great, but, ugly (according to my wife).

does anyone have any experience on the current sunpods?? i like that they incorporate the moon lights also. I would love to go with a sfilogi from aquarium obsessed, but, at 1300, it is kind of pricy!

Sfiligoi is having some major product support issues, I wouldn't even consider buying one of those fixtures.

I wrestled with this same issue; the way I see it, you have only two or three choices. Buy a Giesemann, buy a Maristar or you can do what I'm going to do and float a canopy off the top of the tank 12"-18" and put some Lumenarcs and supplemental T5s inside that.

IMO the Sunpod fixtures will detract from the aesthetic of a rimless tank.

As an aside, the ATI Powermodul is a beautiful T5 fixture but they seem to be held up in customs. Not cheap but oh so fine.

Gerard,
I'm with you. I have no idea what to do for lighting. I'm set with T5s, but they suggest to have them 3-5" off the surface of the water and since my new tank is rimless/canopyless, it's going to be tricky. What I will probably do is something similar to what Nathan is going to do, float a small canopy. I don't like any of the fixtures out there, so I"ll probably retro 6 icecap slr reflectors in a hood and then figure out a way to mount that over the tank, all the while, allowing some look down viewing.

yeah, this is becoming quite a pain - i would hold out for one of the ATI 24" lights, but, i just hate not getting that punch the halides provide for the sps and clams ...

i would consider floating a canopy and i have one of those on the office tank, but, i really don't like the look of it - in my opinion, i really like the look of a nice sleek fixture over the rimless tanks

the search continues.

man, those giesemann infiniti fixtures sure are nice! i might have to show my wife those and maybe she will fall in love with the look of them - i will have to speak with my stand builder and see what he can do for a floating canopy.

You can contact Jesse on RC about Elos products. I thought they had more choices than just the 1.

Have you looked at the Photon brand? I liked the look of them, but for some reason, I can't find them listed anywhere anymore. Captive Oceans used to have them.

is jesse his username??

i have not heard of the photon brand- i must be missing out on all of this cool lighting!

right now, i am looking at one of the aquactinic fixtures with a 175 halide and 2 24 watt t5's with moonlights - my wife really likes the oil rubbed bronze finish ... we will see, they are still pretty pricey - i might end up going back to the 6 bulb icecap with a suspended canopy

I have a 24" sunpod that I am not using,. It has moon lights and a 150w, 14k de bulb. I used it about a month on my 125 just to see if halides made any difference and it did. I now have a 72". You can hang these from the ceiling with a kit that I have also. $180 for all. :)

I haven't seen that finish on the aquatinics, sounds really nice though.

Grotech Photons is the other name of the brand that I was thinking of.
