Lighting and Chiller Suggestions

I have a 100g with a 35g sump and a 4 tube 54w T5 light. The house is AC at about 77 and the tank runs up to 80.7 during the day and 78.2 at night. I can run a fan and cool it down to 77.5 no problems. I would plumb into my sump.

What chiller would you use for this. Cost and noise levels are a concern. I would like one that I could plug a heater into as well. I was looking at the Pacific Coast CL-280.

I plan on upgrading the lights as well to MH for any type of coral. What light do you like and which one would you use? I was thinking of the Outer Orbit 1077 48" 2x250 watt 2x54w 2x54w 9/9

Thanks,

Brian

there is nothing wrong with 80.7, id be more concerned with the temp swing but that can only be fixed with a temp contnroller of some sort like an aquacontroller. if you have heat problems when you get halides, just put a fan blowing over the sump and i bet you would be fine. t5's will provide enough light for any corals, you dont have to get halides for that, but if you do then the best set ups are not the all in one units like you listed, but individual pendants.

Yeah if those temps are what you are getting this time of year, you are not doing too bad. You might also consider dropping the house temp to 75 and increase your evaporation by fans or even running a ceiling fan in the room with the tank. If you have an enlosed canopy, installing fans in the hood to blow over the surface would be a good idea as well as one or two over the sump.

As far as chillers go though, since they are good to have in case your AC goes out, I would recommend the Teco brand. They are very quiet, efficient and good quality. The manufacturer is local, so you can get things fixed quickly if you ever have an issue.

Thanks Guys. I thought about an 8" fan for the sump and placing it on a temp controller. I think I will give it a try first.

Is there a good article on lighting that gives some clues as to what I need. Most people tell me that the 4 bulb T5 I have now will be too small, especially for the lower parts of the tank. If I don't need MH, then I wouldn't get it. If I caould go with larger fixture or two of the 4 bulb, I would go that route.

6 would be ideal... if you plan on SPS, namely acros.. but 4 will be plenty for a mixed tank. You'll just need to watch the palcement and make sure your parms are good and steady.

depending on your budget...the best bang for the buck would be the ATI sunpower fixtures. There is a group buy going on for them right now.
