light and water temp

OK I have a light question, when I plug in my MH after about 2 hours on my water temp rises from 79.5 to 82.7
I turn them off when I see that, other than getting a chiller is there anyway to keep the water from going up so drastically?

how deep is the tank and how many watts, u could raise the light some and u fans blowing at the water or across it

I'm assuming u have them hanging over the tank? the sell some lil fans with a clip u could use, like what people use to put in there car

Have a fan in your stand, clipped onto the sump to blow air across the water.

You can get a little $6 clip on desk fan from target or wal-mart that will suit this nicely.

Otherwise, the only option is to have a controller monitor temp and kick off the MH's once temp rises high enough. Once temp drops, the controller can kick the lights back on.

I have never had a temp issue, so you really don't need a chiller as long as you have adequate ventilation.

The only drawback to using a fan blowing over the sump is that evaporation will increase slightly.

Couple of things... fans over the sump are a good start. Make sure you don't have glass on top of the tank. You want to increase your evaporation rate. Also the ambient temp of your house plays a role. If you keep your house warm, the tank will be warmer. Also make sure you are getting some surface movement on top of the tank. Not only does that help with the oxygenation of the tank, it helps evaporation. You can also put some fans blowing over the surface of the tank or use a room fan. You can also have a dehumidifier in the room, the drier the air the more evap you will have.

Good Point Dave J.

Ever since moving to CA, I am burning about 7-9 gallons per week of top off. In MCKinney, I was at 5 Galls a week.

I added a nice $100 humidifier to our house out here and it added probably 2 days to my topoff interval.

Relative Humidity in your house has a very big role in your evap.
