LifeReef Skimmers???

Anyone have these, or know of them?

I'm going BB on my 36g so I want one bad mother for a protein skimmer. I've thought about purchasing an entire lifereef berlin sump/fuge w/ a protein skimmer.

But for now, let's focus on just the lifereef skimmer. Are they great?

If not, what would you suggest be better?

I used a LifeReef skimmer for 2 years and it did a great job. I'm using an ASM now and like it even more.

I had one, sold it to someone on RC and get emails from them occasionally saying how well its working for them. They are not as good (efficient) as some of the needle wheel and mesh models, but they are very good. Their selling point is their construction, they are on par with GEO and the like. They are very solid skimmers.

I had one for two years, and complained about it often. So often in fact, that when it came time to sell it I thought no-one would ever buy it. It just didn't work well for me, especially as an external (not in-sump) skimmer. It overflowed way too often, and I was unable to mod it in any of the normal ways people usually would to get better results.

Not on my list of good skimmers, unfortunately.

I ended up with the one graviT had and loved it. Best skimmer Ive had I think. I dont think Id buy one new though. If buying new Id get a ReefFlo Orca or a really big octopus (for the 265) I think. The one I had was pretty small, but I seriously considered replacing my much bigger ASM with it.

So would a Euro Reef RS100 be a better skimmer than a LifeReef??

I'm leaning towards this Euro Reef skimmer for my 36g and sump/fuge.

I prefer the Euro-reef over quite a few skimmers.

I think I'm sold on the Euro Reef RS. Perhaps I'm trying to overkill with the 100. Since I have a 36g tank, maybe the RS80 would be fine. It appears the RS80 uses the same pump as the 100, so maybe the 80 would be quite efficient for my 36g tank. And save me some more money!!

FYI, there will be an RS 80 skimmer in the Next Wave raffle. :)

You gotta go to win!

Good thread - I am out in the market for a skimmer for my 33 gal long SPS project tank - I was leaning toward the Aqua-C EV120 because of the small footprint but hear good things about the Euro-Reef 80. I can make the sump / skimmer chamber large enough for the 80 to sit in it. Interested in oppinions.

Concerns:
Would like a skimmer that is relatively low maintenance, low flow, and not going to generate a ton of heat.
Need a small footprint but dont want to go to an urchin, cpr, or remora skimmer
And finally, I want something that works well with little adjustment.
My only issue with the Euro-reef 80 is that it does not have a drain on the cup :-( so for the long vacation, I would have to call a fellow reefer to help out. Any way to mod it without changing the performance?

Brad,

I do like the Euro-Reef... and I would have gotten one. However, I found out that I needed something with a smaller footprint for my sump. I have chosen the Bermuda. http://www.bermudaaquatics.com/3C.htm

Frank at Frank's Tanks swears by them. He has every tank running off of Bermudas at his store. The 3C, which is good for up to 200g DT, only have a 5x7" footprint. I have decided to purchase one of these for my sump. Check them out!

Nice choice w/ the Bermuda! I got a 3C for my tank a few months back and liked is so much I got 2 of the BPS K-14's for the farm.

I used a LifeReef for many years until I sold my tank last year due to a move. While I loved it, never a problem and you rarely have to clean it due to it's self cleansing feature, I don't know enough about the other skimmers being built these days to really compare. I can only speak for the LifeReef. Zero complaints from me.
