Just contacted the city and they do use chloramine to disinfect water. Not sure if that matters but ive bewn looking into getting an ro/di and thought id poat this as brs seems to have a setup specifically to filter this out.

Thoughts?

Our water comes from Lake Texoma over here. Best I can get Plano to admit, they only use chloramine during the hot summer months. Never noticed a difference with my RO/DI 5 stage unit. I did add just a tiny bit, 1 ml of Seachem Prime to my buckets during the summer on the advise of David, DFW just to be extra safe.

If you pay the city water company you should get a yearly report of what is tested in the water I know in flower mound they use chloramines on the water. I use the pre packaged chloramine filter from brs. I also change my filters every six months even if the prefilter is not dirty.

The NTMWD obtains surface water from three sources: Lake Lavon, Plano’s primary water source, and Lakes Texoma and Cooper, our supplemental water sources.
Conversation with the last guy suggested Coit and Hwy 121 was being supplied by Texoma at the time. This was early summer though. Water restriction was on the zebra mussels infestation, not so much supply and demand.

And a little more digging... Looks like the following cities are served by the Wylie NTMWD plant: Allen, Farmersville, Frisco, Garland, McKinney, Plano, Princeton, Richardson, Rockwall, Royse City,
Wylie, Caddo Mills, Cash, Copeville, East Fork, Fairview, Fate, Josephine, Lavon, Little Elm, Lucas, Melissa, Milligan, Mt. Zion, Murphy, Nevada, North Collin, Parker, Prosper, Rowlett, Sachse, and Seis Lagos.

Finally, from the NTMWD FAQ Page:

Hmmm, I didn't even think about the potential of chloramines in the tap water. Fortunately, I haven't seen any issues in the almost 5 years I've been running my tank. Do chloramines not get filtered out by the RO membrane?

EDIT: Just looked it up and looks like it's carbon that pulls it out.

Marc can speak in more detail on this, but a 75 gpd unit with two GAC inserts will neutralize chloramines. Any more then 75 gpd and there isnt enough contact time with the carbon to neutralize the chloramines. My water has chloramines, I use a 75 gpd unit, and I have no issues.

You can also use prime from what I have read what other members use to neutralize ammonia

Heath and Pampee are both right. I spoke with marc to confirm this information.

What do you guys think of the BRS 6 stage 75GPD system? I live in Plano and want my water as pure as possible so would take a slower system for decreased chloramines.

You could always add a catalytic carbon stage. Or better yet, splurge for the BRS chloramine buster... They carry a hefty price tag, but are supposed to last 20,000 gallons

I am in Wylie and always use a touch of Prime as it will not hurt just to be on the safe side. I know that from the last report they have added the chloramine to the water so it is better safe than sorry.
