Let there be light

OK. So now, I need to light my setup.

75 gallons. I have zero desire to keep SPS. I would want to keep mostly softies, with a few LPS like a frogspawn or hammer.

Is 8 wpg too much? I guess you can NEVER have too much... but I was curious. Are mushrooms and zoos going to bleach or get pissed off if I have 600 watts sitting over a tank of that depth?

If all you want are softies and a little LPS, then I would do one 4 bulb VHO kit and call it done. 440w is plenty.

How is he going to get 440w from a 4 bulb fixture that sits on a 75g tank?
Here's all you would need for what you say you want.

If you want to go just a little bigger just in case you wanted to keep some high light demanding critters some day... then upgrade to this.

I think the 4 bulb would be more than fine.

And how is that gonna be fine. No need to crucify someone for giving their input.

I wasn't crucifying anyone. I'm stating that he can't get 440w with a 4 bulb T5 fixture that is going to fit over a 75g tank. Geez, lighten up. I then provided two options that he could go with. What side of the bed did you wake up on today?

I wasn't even thinking VHO. Sorry. Back to the point of the thread... you don't need 440w for a simple reef tank. I was trying to help you out. Like I said, a 4x54w T5 would be fine. And 6x54w would be top notch for what you want. You could even keep SPS with a 6x54w over a 75g tank.

im assuming we'd have issues with heat and evaporation there! :p

though i think it would be a great idea if my main goal was to have a private hot tub in my living room!

Both of the above are fine options if you have the money for T5s. The reason I suggested the VHO retro kit is new they are around $150, and I see them on the boards used for around $100 or so. Very economical way to get a really good looking tank going. It doesn't draw a lot of current and the ARO kit I have has a three year warranty.

I run that kit on my 90G and my nephew runs it on his 55G with no heat issues with a canopy fan. We keep LPS happy, and RBTAs as well (which some will argue won't even live under VHO).

I agree that Franks suggestions are fine, no argument here! It's your pocketbook.

This is assuming that the tank has a canopy. Otherwise a fixture like the ones above is needed, of course....

Yea, we don't know if there is a canopy. I assumed not since you didn't mention one. Thus I picked out fixtures and not retro fits.

Hope we helped.

Try to stay away from the watts per gallon thing, that is really not very accurate or even helpful. Watts on bulbs is the amount of electricity used by the bulbs, not its output. For example.... 100W of T-5 will give off more light than 100W of VHO..... You need to focus on PAR output rather than wattage. Where wattage comes in is figuring out electricity costs etc.

For a 75 with no SPS, 4 54W T-5 will be plenty. I would not suggest you go with VHO as T-5 are vastly superior to them.

There is also the factor of looks.... VHO and T-5 will not offer up the shimmering that MH does. For some it doesn't matter, others prefer it. Just something to consider.

True enough, but most people starting out don't have access to a PAR meter. T5s are better, as for "vastly superior", to each his own.

I can't run my tank like a lot of people do, I have to weigh Cost vs. Performance at every turn, as this is still a HOBBY. A lot of people say to "invest" in the expensive stuff up front. I can't, I just buy what makes sense at the time, and look for opportunities to upgrade later. Will I spend more in the long run? Probably. But the reality is that I have to spread that cost across time. I would love to try out Solaris, but I simply can't buy lights that cost more than most cars I have owned (including the one I'm driving right now!).

I got really annoyed at the advise I got when starting out, since most suggested stuff that was simply not affordable. I understand that an $800 skimmer will usually work better than a $200 one, but I try not to convince people they need more than they do to get started. I don't like sounding like a used car salesman, and it's not that I'm trying to guard anyone from the real sticker shock that will come with this hobby, I just assume that other people have budgets too. :)

Why would you need a PAR meter? Most websites post the specifications for output or it can be fairly easy to find once you start looking.

You also make the assumption that T-5 is much more expensive than VHO, its slightly higher but not dramatically higher like your overblown examples. If you are happy with your VHO great... my advice comes after years of experience and helping many people start up their own systems, seeing how happy they were with T-5 and how many wish they had gone that route afterwards instead of VHO and how many people come on here wanting to change out VHO for T-5 once they see them in action (yes even those on a budget).

You can find used T-5 retros on this site, ebay and reefcentral all the time for good prices and fixtures are always up as well.

Heelhok - Advice is basically the same. Buy the best you can afford, and research & shop your options.

And most of all have fun, that is what this hobby used to be about...

Would this be too much for a 75 gallon tank? Coralife 2x250w HQI with 4 moonlights and 2 96w PC said:
Depends on what you keep... lighting needs are based on your inhabitants mostly, though size of the tank matters too (deeper = more light needed to reach bottom). In your case, you could keep anything with that much light. Just watch your photo period to adjust as you are putting quite a bit of light into that tank. If things fade or bleach... you may want to reduce the time.
