I am looking at switching to leds. I wanted to do a diy kit an use my power compact fixture. My question is where to buy a good kit? How many of the blue and whites would i need to mainly grow lps and softies with rics and yumas in a 90 gallon standard tank? I have plenty of live rock all the way up the back wall of the tank with lps up higher.

I have stevesleds and i am very happy, he gives a great discount to dfwmas members. there is also rapidled and reefleds (not sure about the name on that one).

The kit i set up is 3 blue to 1 white, but i have a lot of suplemental leds, and will be way overlighting my tank, so drivers will def not be running atn100 %

People typically do 2 to 1 blue to white. Stevesleds, rapidleds, and reefledlights all sell kits with everything. Having everything in the kit is a stretch because none of the rapidled kits come with a heatsink, you will need to navigate somewhere else on their site and add them separately.

As far as heat sinks goes could I use the power compact case? It is aluminum but thin. The power compact case is a current usa.

Just like this one only mine is 48 in.

Any reasonable amount of leds attached to that would overheat. said:
Ok that is kinda what i was thinking. So looking at doing 2 square tubes in side of that fixture 40" long with a fan forcing air through the tubes. Might even do 4-20" tubes to help keep some heat down.

Look at this on eBay are these worth trying?

48" - 51" Aquarium LED Light 3W x 32 Lunar Reef Fish Plant Tank Hood

I would avoid anything that didnt have a description of the leds. You want to look for phillips luxeon or cree brand wise. If they dont specify than chances are they are not name brand

Ok looking at this site and they seem pretty good. What about 2 of these kits for a 90 gallon. The only reason for 2 of these kits would be to help keep the wires hidden, as well as less soldering as I'm not the greatest solderer. Anyone use this place before?

I would go for two 36 piece led kits if you decide to go aquastyle, I had 32 over and Aquapod and felt it could have used more LEDs, they aren't as powerful as Cree or luxeon. Spend the money and get the luxeons from Steve I just bought them and they blow the aquastyles away

I had 48 over a 36x18 70. I also have a buddy with 36 over a 90. Really depends on what you want to keep.

So i think i am going to order 72 led diy kit. Now i am looking at doing 6-4500k, 6-6500k, 12-10k, 6-uv, 6-red, and 36-blue. Does that mix sound about what I would need?
