Keep fish in the water

What do you use to keep your fish from jumping out? I have a canopy on one tank and had glass lids with the back part open for equipment on my other tanks. Somehow the fish just disappear.

They are either jumping out and get eaten by my cats, or they lodge themselves into a rock and don't come out, or there is some unknown in my tank.

I don't think its the last one because I have had my rock out several times and also looked at night but I suppose its still possible.

You may have to place a mesh cover over it. I'm looking into making one for myself. I've looked into the cost of the mesh and it's fairly cheap but you have to buy in such large quantities that it makes the purchase price around $100 +. I’ve been looking for a local dealing but have came up empty. I might have to just bite the bullet.

i just have eggcrate (called light difuser at home depot i believe) and it works just fine. i even have it on my tank with a canopy because the fish can still jump into the overflow or get stuck on the center brace.

The last fish was a jawfish that I had for quit a while.

I thought about eggcrate but does that diffuse the light?

I thought about mesh but it would also diffuse the light I think, wouldn't it?

Today at the fish store I saw a freshwater betta jump through a 1/4" hole in the lid of its cup. Fortunately for the store it went into a tank.
To me that was amazing.

I made some covers for mine. I bought some 1/4" bird netting off the net which is also uv resistant. Then I got some window screen building material from Home depot and made it. It works perfectly and looks great.

Good link. That is how I did mine although I bought some netting that is black. You just need to get some netting that is UV resistant so it does get brittle and break like some I have seen people use. I haven't lost a fish since doing this.

I finally got the screen top made. I think it looks GREAT! And now I don't have to worry about loosing fish! At least to jumping.

Here is a picture of the cut out I made for the HOB filter.

I need a support rod from the front to the cutout for support but all in all I am ecstatic about no more flying fish.

I need to go purchase the cross-member kit from the home improvement store so there is no picture of that yet.

To cut the notch for the electric wire I used a hacksaw to start with and then a dremel with grinding disc and then a file. The important thing is to cut the underside past the trim plate and not cut the top that far.

Well my mesh screen was working fine, no fish on the floor. Then I got a new yellow headed jawfish. I noticed that I could not find it the next day. I thought ,"well it must be in its burrow". On the third day I got concerned. I decided to clean the glass so I removed the light fixture and there on top of the mesh was one dried out jawfish. I would never have guessed it would jump out that filter hole especially with the filter in it running. I now have a small piece of acrylic for the hole.

Nothing is foolproof.
