Kalk Reactor?

Hey Guys,

I was thinking about getting the TLF Kalkwasser reactor, but my ATO is ran by an aqua lifter pump. How exactly does the reactor work and would I be able to run it effectively with my current setup?

I have a TLF kalc reactor and can tell you it is not built to run off your ATO pump. It may work some but I doubt it will mix the kalc slurry very well if at all, so consider using a different pump and you should be fine

I use a small pond pump that cost about $20

here are a couple videos I made on it

Why not just add kalk to your top off water and drip it from there? It's pretty safe if you have a good ATO with multiple float switches. My ATO won't run for more than 3 minutes at a time so the chance of overdose is minimal. You'd just have to figure out how much kalk to add per gallon of water to match your usage.

I run my kalkwasser through an avast Kalk reactor. I personally would not run Kalk through an ato. I would either run it through a timer or a dosing pump. I run mine through a profilux dosing pump so i know exactly what amount of kalk is exactly going into my tank. Going through a ato from week to week the amount of Kalk from ato can vary plus less chance of nuking your tank

agreed - best is to run them on a timer so you know what your dosing and not accidently overdoss if you have a failure someplace where your ATO would kick in for more then just a normal top off.

mine is on athe APEX timer to run 15 seconds every hour - with a shut off or wont run when the ph is over a certain set point

That's the beauty/evil of dosing in an ATO. If you already have a good, safe ATO like the JBJ there's really no chance of nuking the tank, (it won't run for more than 3 minutes at a time unless you set it for more). Lot's of people probably run an ATO anyway so it comes down to either adding another piece of equipment or using what's already available to get the same result. It's really a "to each his own" kind of situation. If you want to spend more money and add more equipment then a kalk reactor is not a bad choice. You can accomplish the same result with your ATO you already have and adding a little kalk and doing your tests, (which you will have to do with a reactor as well).

Good point because timers never fail, right? :)

My ATO runs flawlessly, but I would not feel comfortable running Kalc out of it.. It's a 10g tank that doesn't come out. Cleaning would be an issue, and the pump would need more cleaning. No thanks !! Dripping Kalc periodically has worked well for me. Hassle free. Once demand doesn't allow it anymore a doser or Calcium reactor will come in line.

I wouldn't dose kalk via ATO either if I couldn't remove the container. Dripping kalk with my ATO is the easiest/cheapest/safest/most stable method I could come up with for my tank. I don't have room for a reactor and I'm not interested in high dollar dosing pumps for 2 part. Manual dosing is totally out for me. More than one way to skin a cat! :)

IdReefer, make sure you test your Calcium and PH before you start dripping Kalc !!!!! It will raise both !!Get a 1g container. The sturdier, the better. Get some regular airline tubing. Drill 2 small holes on the top lid( the tubing needs to be forced into the wholes, so measure accordingly). Cut 1 piece of tubing so it runs from 1`hole about 3 fingers length from the bottom of container), to just above the water line in your sump. Cut this piece and put one of those little drip control palstic thingies (sorry don't know what they're called) lol. Cut another small piece of tubing and place in the other hole. This smaller piece is for you to blow into to get the drip started , once the kalc powder and ro water have been mixed into the container. Make sure you let the solution sit for a few hrs so kalc can settle !!Once the drip starts, set it to desired rate. Once per second is what i do. Make sure the longer piece of tubing doesn't go all the way to the bottom of the container(on the inside). You don't want it to pick up the kalc sediment that settles. That's why I said 3 finger lenght from bottom. You can also Google dripping Kalc if you want some pics.
