Kalk only PH 10?

Hello all! I am trying to make some kalk solution but can't get it to the PH 12 everyone says it should be.

I am using 4 TSP for 2 gallons of around 2 TDS RODI water.

I am using a calibrated PH probe.

Whats the problem? Any suggestions?

None. Just stirring it for a few seconds.

I used to do this about a year ago, and as far as I can remmeber it always mixed to 12 PH right away.

The ph of completely saturated limewater is 12.4.. take the sample outside and give it a good stir for 5 minutes..

not to hijack your thread but adding alittle white vinegar is actually good when mixing kalkwasser.

tried all those combos.. 10ph
used 6 tsp for 2 gallons.. still 10ph

could my probe be bad??? I calibrated it to 7ph
do i have to calibrate it to 2 solutions???

What should vinegar be? ph that is? my probe is showing 4.9ph

If I get the 2 calibration fluids how does the calibration work? I calibrate it to one solution? 7ph?
And when I test the 10ph solutions should it be already at 10? Not having to calibrate it again?

You mix white vinegar with kalwasser before you add water to form more CO2. Which makes it easier for the kalkwasser to dissolve in your water this means you get less of that white sandy sediment

Found this info on google if want more info

"Dissolving the Kalk powder in the Vinegar first will accomplish several very good things.

First, it will get more Calcium ions (Ca++) into the solution because you are dissolving the Ca(OH)2 in an acid instead of water, and forming Calcium Acetate, which exists as a dissociated equilibrium of free Calcium ions and Acetate ions.

Second, the Acetic Acid (Vinegar) provides an equivalent of all the CO2 you need to avoid precipitating the newly-added Calcium ions as useless white Calcium Carbonate powder.

Third, after all the cool Calcium ion chemistry is over, the leftover Acetate ions from the broken-down Vinegar leaves you with free organic Carbon in the water that feeds the bacteria in your tank so that it converts more poisonous Nitrates to NO2 gas (a very good thing).

Adding Vinegar in Kalkwasser is one of the few win-win situations for reefers -- it has a great up side and I've yet to encounter a down side to doing it. I don't know why so few reefers do it -- lack of understanding of the chemistry behind it maybe -- but a lot more are starting now that some respected reef writers have discovered it and have recommended it and even written up detailed instructions for it"

If you need a ph test solution I can give you some tablets you mix with RO water that will create test solution of 7.0 I use this to make sure my probes are still good..I can bring them to the next meeting

I think the probe is bad. Do these things go bad often?
It is a milwalkee...

No matter where I put the calibration screws it won't hit 12.

Whats a good replacement probe?

My Milwaukee reads .2 pH lower than my Pinpoint, and I have tested both on known solutions other than calibration fluid and trust my Pinpoint over Milwaukee. But not as severe as the 2.0 variance you may be seeing.

So I highly recommend Pinpoint, but not sure how well the work with other manufacturer controllers.
