just got a 29g biocube with too much live rocks

i have just purchases a 29g biocube with at least 40 pound of live rock or maybe even more ...lets just say it fill up the tank. The live rock have some hair like stuff on it and some have purple stuff and some with red slime. I just put all the rocks together in the biocube and let it run without lights. Just wondering if im doing the right thing if not please show me what i show do to get my tank ready for a reef tank. and is it better to have live rock as my filtering system or a oceanic protein skimmer made for the biocube? can just just scrap the hair off the rocks?

Running with lights off will help control the algae while you find a longer term solution. Removing algae by hand is fine.

Keep your rock and get a skimmer. A skimmer is probably the best money spent on any system.

yep... live rock is good it's good to have 1 to 1 1/2 times pounds to water volume gallons(IMO).It may look cluttered but its well worth it when you start looking at the future with a more self sustained system. Also, not sure how this would work with a bio cube but I like to keep my rocks of the walls so it makes cleaning a little easier.

Get a test kit. Get a master test kit that has ammonia, nitrites, nitrates and high PH I use API. Not sure the history of this tank and its rocks (cured or not) but you need to see where it's at with the cycle. Micro algae will be there not a big thing just will need to add a cleanup crew... which I did when I saw the nitrates dropping way down.

This will take time... take it slow.... add things to your tank after it cycles at a very slow rate! You need to build a bio load to handle what your tank has now and what you are going to be adding later. Take this time to read...read...read... don't put anything in your tank that you don't know what it is or what it needs. And then read some more.
